Headlights will not move and no dash lights

I replaced the stereo in my ’83 and now the headlights are stuck in the up position and the dash lights do not work. When the stereo was replaced the head lights were in the down position then after the stereo was successfully installed the lights were used. When I turned the lights off they did not flip back down, I have tried the up / down rocker switch with no success. It would seem that the lights are not “stuck” per sa but rather the electronic motor which drives the headlights up and down is not being activated…
Any ideas?

The dashboard light problem is the same as headlight issue in that worked 100% A OK until the stereo was installed and now they don’t work at all.

I have checked all the fuses and they are all fine, I have pulled the stereo back out the insure that a plug was not disconnected and found no obvious culperts. Rather perplexing..

Most certainly unrelated my tail lights don’t work, so if you have any ideas they would be appreciated

Check your fusable links under the hood.... sounds like you installed the stereo wrong. Usually when something goes wrong AFTER you make a change, the change had something to do with the problem....

yea, i have that same problem. i took the center area out to wire up my antenna crap, and when i went to try it my CD player didn't work, none of the interior lights worked, and my head lights stayed up as well. the nice thing is that i'm having a friend look at it that works at a dealership, so after this weekend it should be back to normal. if u don't figure it out b4 then, and no one tells u what to try, i'll let u know what my problem was and try to help u get it fixed--later

It's got to be a fuse or fusible link.

I am betting on the parking light fuse. I had this EXACT same thing happen to me and the parking light fuse is what it was.

hmmm I checked out all of the fuses in the fuse box so I don't think that is it...
I will check the fuseable links this weekend when I get time. My guess is that headlights ans dash lights are realted but the rear lights is a seperate issue.

Well check again. The fuse marked TAIL/ILLUMINATION causes EXACTLY the problem you are having. You probably wired the stereo wrong which is causing it to short out.

I'm putting my money on the Fusible Link at the driver's side strut tower, specifically the one marked "HEADLIGHTS" - when this link blows, it will not allow your retractor motors to spin, which will leave them in the 'up' position.

The dash lights and rear tails are likely a blown fuse at the driver's side footwell, since you likely had to splice an ignition-hot circuit here. It's easy to short something out when you can't see what you're doing very well.

Let us know what you find - you have a compound problem from your description,

A blown TAIL/ILLUMINATION fuse does all this exactly. Why does it need to be a compound problem?

I also blew that 10 amp Tail/Illumination fuse and it did the same thing. It was because I connect two wires under the shift boot which grounds the circuit when they're connected together. One is a red and blue wire the other is black and they look like ther supposed to be connected but their not.

Change all three fuseble links on the strut tower, two brown wires and a black one inbetween the middle.

You are the winner!!! I will have to remove center console and look for the two connectors. Can you remember if the connection was just one wire to one wire or fi each connector had multiple wires.

Thanks

It's one red and blue wire and one black wire. Can you not see if it's connected by removing the shifter boot?
