headlights

Hey everyone im haveing problems with my headlights. My 84 has been sitting for about 2 1/2 years and now my lights won't come up & on. They where working before but not now. I can put the switch on the the dash on and manually turn the ***** to make the lights come up but they still won't come. Do you think that both the headlights could have gone out at the same time? Well thanks for the input

Its very possible that they went at the same time. I thought the idea of both lights going out at the same time was nearly impossible until both my highbeams blew out at the same time. I thought it must have been something else, so I drove around for about a year without highbeams. When I finally got around to changing the bulbs, the problem went away.
Do the lights come up if you raise the lever on the steering column? If they only come up when you push the button on the center console, you may just have a blown fuse.

Your signal unit behind the steering wheel may be bad.

That happened to me once and it was the 'fusible links'. You can usually get the material to fix it in a bubble pack off the rack at the autostore.

Have you located the problem yet? Just wondering, because I'm picking up another 1st gen ('85 GSL) for my wife later this week and the headlights on that car won't come down.

I agree with Kentetsu, although my problem was totally odd-ball and I have no idea on how to explain it. I would rather not go into details since it will probably confuse people.

LOL... I finally got to see the car again and had a chance to diagnose the headlight problem. The verdict: (drum roll)----

The headlight switch on the instrument panel was in the "up" position! The owner accidentally bumped it a couple of months ago and didn't notice! She drove it with the headlights up all this time wondering why they wouldn't go down when she shut them off.

So after laughing at her I bought the car. That's 1st gen number five for us, all of which were GSLs and two of which we still own.

Lmao! I was going to suggest that very possibility, but then noticed your post count and felt it might be insulting to mention the obvious. Glad you got if taken care of, and congrats on the new purchase.
