head light washer
head light washer
I've got an 84 gsl, that has an extra washer contain underneath the windshield washer container. I've notice that the schematic show wiring for a headlight washer, did these cars come with headlight washers and where did they operate from?
The headlamp washer system, available in Canada and most other markets, had the washer tank located under the passenger headlight assy, actually in the inside of the fender with the filler nozzle sticking out a hole in the "floor" of the inner fender at the headlamp motor. If you see a tank under your washer tank, could this be the your Cold Start Assist Tank? (follow the hose...does it lead to the carb?) The headlamp washer was activated off the rear wiper rocker switch, which had a third position to activate the front washers. All the hardware is still available in Canada, either new ($$$!) or used if you want to contact a Canuk rotorhead to get the parts...

Saved about 3kg and cleared up some room for the IC piping
Cold Start Assist used a mixture of 90/10 antifreeze/water to be injected by a motor as the engine cranked. The Mazda design was to increase compression of the engine through injecting a high antifreeze solution in with the fuel/air. Effectiveness is uncertain - I live in AZ where our winters never get below freezing (32F).
You can remove it like most of the rest of us, but be sure to plug the inlet line on the intake manifold so if it ever does get that cold in your area the port won't open and introduce a vacuum leak in your intake system. For most of us this isn't an issue.

Ok, crossing thread here. Their is a sub zero starting fluid container by the firewall - I think all first gen had them - and it does feed a glycol mix into the carb when the temp is 0 degrees F. There is ALSO another container in under the passenger headlight that is for the sprayer for the headlights. I am looking for a rubber boot that fits over one of these for my 85 GSL - Jon, please say you have not hit the "delete" key on your garage trash can!
