head light motor question

Have RX7 1980, one of the headlight motors would not roll down, it
will only work up when light is turn on, do I have to replace
the motor or can it be fix?

Thanks in advance

Juan - get someone to actuate the motor while you watch it; its a simple rotary (HA!) mechanism actuating a pair of arms attached to the headlight assy. These arms will fail; the motor itself is usually pretty reliable. First you need to see if the motor is actually turning. The fact it at least goes up seems to say it is OK.

If motor itself is working, then it likely these linkage arms. They fail where they attach to the motor's ball joint, and at the light's ball joint. The arm has nylon snaps that break with age. Cannot be repaired, whole arm needs to be bought. Just snap on or off, so easy install.

NOTE: these ball joints should be LUBED with white lithium grease, which is likely all-but-gone, so even on the working light, this old grease should be removed (toothbrush and Simple Green work great) and re-lubed!! Obviously, new arms should be lubed when attached too.
Also the rubber weather seal around the motor itself (which is at the top of the unit) develops cracks and moisture will eventually destroy motor - I use the electricians rubber-in-a-bottle to brush over these cracks and reseal the motor covers.

Hi Stu

We tried your suggestion, the arm seems find, cause the motor is not moving at all to close the latch, what I notice is this: when turn the **** to close the latch manually, the latch suddenly close and open twice on its own, it seems that made electrical connection, what do you think.
I found two motors on ebay for $39.00???????

Thanks

Juan-
yeah, maybe a "dead" spot in the motor winding?? Obviously MUCH easier to swap in a new one, so yeah, get on of the ebay ones. make sure you get the correct side!! The attachment arms are re-useable if your are careful about detachment. But if you break a nylon retainer, they are toast. Relube everything when you install, and be sure the motor's rubber seal is in good shape, like I said earlier.
Lights should be DOWN to swap motors, BTW. Easy to do-

Did you check out the Parts-For-Sale area here? Remember the 79-80 are unique, tho a later one may actually work, but looks different...
These motors are actually pretty reliable so unless its from a damaged car, chances are good they will be OK-

If you need a new headlight motor let me know. I've got access to 3 SA parts cars. It may be a couple of weeks before I get a chance to get out and pull parts, but if you're still needing one the next time I go out there I can pull the one you need and should be pretty easy to test it on my car before hand to make sure that it's working. Here's a link to a thread that I have with pictures of the parts cars. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=759932 I just pulled the bumper off of the grey one and since I knew I didn't have to worry about putting it all back together I pulled most of the front end off just to make it easier to do everything from above (plus it was a real easy way to see how everything went together on the front end without having to take mine apart. lol), so it would be real easy to pull one off of that car and I could get it to you pretty cheap.
