HC waaaayyy too high plz help!!!!
i need some advice on lowering hydrocarben #'s in an 85 GSL
heres the #'s
idle speed 805 max 220
high speed 359 max 220
all others are fine.
ive already done a search and tried some of the tricks (denaturalized alchohol timing adjustments checked/cleaned plugs new cap and rotor, wires) and all my emmision equiptment is hooked up.
and would i want to retard or advance my timing because returning it to stock didn't help.

hmm lucky me no cats=funner god i love louisiana's lax emmisions laws
it also helps to know an inspection guy
try replacing the cat like 82trans said
add2 bottles of 90% alcohol also if you can find tech alcohol thats more like 100%
around 1/2 gallon for a full tank maybe a gallon than that should do the trick

I think 82transam has the right idea.
If you've done everything from denatured alcohol to timing to a tune up, there's some part of your emissions equipment which isn't working right. Either your cat or your ACV or your air pump...
Depending on how much it costs to re-test and how many retests you can do, another thing I'd try before buying new cats is to plumb the air pump straight into the two tubes for the cats. Skip the ACV completely. It's worth a shot. Otherwise you're buying a new cat as far as I can tell.

once mine had high HC, turns out there was a vacuum leak, mechanic diagnosed it and pin pointed the leak by poking around with a tube connected to a propane bottle.
when propane was bled into the carb at idle, the motor rev'd up, and the HC went down
mazda dealer mechanic said I needed a new carb......what a bunch of clowns!

so anyway, this is a little off subject but i cant make sense of the timing marks on the pulley do i line up leading and trailing to the yellow and orange marks (not necesarily in that order) i have a timing light but it doesnt have an abvance adjustment dial. im just sick of reading and trying to make sense of those terribly written service manuals.
i realy appreciate the help guys, thanks.

your acv is prolly bad, if its bad, then the air pump air doesnt go to the EXHAUST PORTS like it is supposed too.
you dont need alcohol or changing the timing or a cat, the system just needs to work correctly

Yea he could try replacing the ACV, or at least pulling it off and cleaning it out/checking it over etc.... Definatly worth a shot.
I still vote for the cat being old and worn out, they do go bad over time, and rotary exhaust heat doesn't help....
Either way I wish him luck. sounds like you have some hardass's over there if he was looking over your car that closely....

my suggestion is pay the guy off, or not have a rotary in that state. seriously though there are some trick of **** you can dump in right before you go, and with a new cat, you might be able to get by.
