Hard to start after sitting

Ok so my '84 GSL does not like to start real easy after it has been sitting for a few days.

Here are the symptoms...

Car sits for a couple of days, and bango it does not want to start.

If I crank the car long enough she will eventually start, but it can be an involved process.

I have to manipulate the gas peddal, and the choke to get the car to start.

Once the car starts she is fine, runs great, and starts right up the next time I go to start her.

Untill she sits for about two days and then the headachs begin again.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Carb, fuel pump?

I have changed my feul filter, I am confidant that it is ok.

Thanks guys

After it has sit for a few days pop the air cleaner off and then pump the gas to see if the AP is pumping fuel properly. Oh.... or perhaps you could just move to California. I hear cold starts aren't much of a problem there.

Man the way the weater has been latley I just might (not really)

See I don't drive the car after about the first week in Octorber, so it is not so much a cold start problem...

But I will check that, thanks Bob

Based on my experience, it's always more difficult to start the Rx-7 after it's been sitting for a few days. Regardless of the outside temp.

I'll second that notion.
older/worn motors especially.

If I run the car every day I don't have the problem.

I think the feul is draining out of the carb.

Is this a feul pump problem or a carb problem?

Sterling? RX-7 Carl?

Any one?

Thanks

Starting the car at about mid 40 deg. is considered a cold start for me.

your problem doesn't sound so rare. i hate letting my car sit for a few days because it has problems starting. maybe it's just and rx-7 thing. i think it does have a little to do with the cold. my car drives a lot better in the summer.

Had the smae problem not too long ago on a customer's car.

The fuel would slowly leak out of the float bowl into the intake over time.

The bowl would then be empty and take a little cranking before it would fill back up.

This would also cause hard starting when hot too. Fuel would fill up the intake flooding the engine.

Since the pump only comes on when the engine is actually cranking or running I'll bet the fuel isn't up to proper pressure for the Nikki's liking. I remember reading that there's a connector in the engine bay that you can jumper that'll start the pump running with the just the key in the ON position. This may just be for the GSL-SE but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any better info on this?

Thanks for the info guys!!

I have been thinking that the feul pump is suspect.

A mechanic friend of mine said that too, I just wanted to check with the experts here befor I went and did something like have my carb rebuilt, or change my feul pump and not have the problem solved.

As far as it being an RX-7 thing, my '85 GSL was one of the most reliable car I have ever driven - It started in hot weather, freezing cold like -15 Deg. F no problem.

My '84 GSL just started doing this about a month before I put her away. So I am not convinced that it is just an RX-7 thing...

Thanks again for your feed back guys
