Hard copy parts catalog 84-85 needed for consultation
Hello everyone,
Can someone who physicaly own the parts catalog look at page 24 of the engine section, page 1-e3 and tell me the part number of the oil pan bolts... the number is blurry on the copy version and i cannot get it right. I just broke one.
Thanks

Hmm. Yeah, it is tough to tell. The first number could be a 9 or maybe a 2, although Mazda geneal bolts/nuts seem to usually start with a 9. Could also be maybe: 987340612. Hard to tell. Could your Mazda dealer look it up? They have the original mirofiche. Although, I doubt they would want to bother seeing how it is just one bolt.
I searched and couldn't find that bolt size, but I swear that it has been posted before. I sent a messge to Jeff20B to see if he could come by and post the size.

Looking at all the other bolts, it seems they all start with 99...
To my surprise, the parts guy at mazda said he would look it up using the micro-fiche.
I was told 6 months ago they did not have those anymore... lazy guy??? Anyway i trust you guy more than the dealer looking for a few bolts, that will not pay their rent.
If i look in the alphabetical index of the parts catalog, under bolt, oil pan, it takes me to page 1-d7, to transmission case and main control (automatic), where there is a oil pan bolt, #0338-19-837
Would this do, did mazda bother changing the bolts from automatic to manual???

That is a very nice offer, thank you! The only negative is that it would probably be faster to find these here... but it's winter here so...

The size you're looking for is metric 6mm x 1.0 thread pitch and the length should be around 10mm. Threaded all the way is fine. You'll notice that Mazda's bolts have an unthreaded section at the tip. This is to help guide the bolt as it is installed. It's not necessary to find an aftermarket bolt with this feature. Or maybe a forum member can send you a couple of stock ones?

One regular one will do for now.
It's funny how I can relate to everything I read here. I've been mad about the rx-7 since I saw a gsl-se parked in a driveway everyday on the schoolbus ride when I was seven. Finnaly bought one last spring. The car is a gem by Canada (read rust) standard. I took it to a solo 2 event and she loved it.
Having limited mechanical knowledge, I just finished replacing the oil cooler and lines.
First lesson learned: do not assume everything is stock on a old car. It seems the gsl-se had a small radiatior with the OC mounted below... I had a FMOC and a big rad. Took me a week to build coustom brackets, cutting, heating and hammering steel plate but i did it!!! I had ordered SS line from racing beat. But now that the oc is in front, the lines are a very tight fit and i am afraid it will stress the oc outlets.
Lesson two : do very good planing.
Only after removing the oil pan bolts did i realize the center link was in the way big time. Now i need to lift the engine or remove the center link, for which i need a special puller (more money...) It was pure maintenance has it is not leaking. The bolts go back and i leave it as is but now i cracked one, even do i had a torque wrench at the good spec. I guess the -10 celcius temperature in my garage is for something.
Lesson three: If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
Next will be the air pump removal, just bought my 3l220 belt. Then removal of radio, power antenna, cruise control unit, storage bins, brake calipers seals, removal of brake dust plates, build of brake cooling lines.
Just received my used hoosier r6 tire (80$ for 4 on ebay for 50% use). My extra set of gsl-se wheels just came back from sandblasting, I'll paint them bronze (my car is black) with dupli-color's wheel paint (thank grassroot motorsports magazine)
I should be busy this winter as i have a two week old newborn in the house.
See you on the track in montreal with the CADL (king of local nasa or scca) next summer
I read a few archived post everynight while comforting my kid who cry at 4 in the morning :-)
You all are of great help. I feel more than the love for my RX, I feel i belong to a community!
