had some problems starting up this morning

okay, here's the thing,
I started up my car this morning and let it run for about five mintues, then I go pick up my girlfriend for school. the car starts idling at about 2,500 and backfiring alot.. I go to the gas station fill it up, and it's still doing it. so finally I'm about a mile from school, and I'm pissed so I just gun it and take the revs to about 5-6k then the car idles down to 1,000 and runs smooth as silk all the way to school. I'm still at school so I haven't tried to start it back up yet, but I'm afriad that I could mess something up.
someone please tell me what's going on.. I just had the shutter valve replaced about 2 months ago, andmy driveline was replaced less than a week ago (nice solid custom built piece..)

so someone please tell me what's going on, I'm hoping it was just maybe the car deciding to have a bad morning.

thanks for any help.
God Bless.

Sounds like one of your float bowls overflowed. Have you taken some of your carb apart lately? If one of the needles is not sitting properly, it could cause an intermitent float bowl overflow problem that could cause your car to idle erradicly and backfire (because your car is getting way too much fuel).

I'd also check my choke mechanism if I were you. If it isnt retracting fully when the engine has warmed up, it could cause an over-rich situation.

What year car do you have and how do you have it set up?

Keep us posted on what you find.

Hopefully it is like passing a Kidney stone. Once it's out, it's out...until the next time!

Could you girlfriend have anything to do with it?

I just had some carb work done.. he replaced the shutter valve in my carb.. if he screwed something up I think I'm gonna slap him with a lawsuit.. 4-5 months ago, took it in to get the shutter valve replaced, my 18th birthday I get it back from another shop after getting my clutch replaced, and it's running horrible, take it to the guy for rotaries, and he's like oh, your shutter valve is busted.. I was pissed, it cost me abother 400$ to get the damn thing fixed...
so if he screwed it up, I'm going to say either fix it for free, or lawsuit time..
gotta love it, one of my best friends is a lawyer for over 20 years.. (well, actually he's like a mentor, but I have no desire to be one)

oh ya' I doubt the girlfriend had anything to do with the car, she enjoys washing it...
go figure...

anyways, thank for the help.
God Bless.
