Depending on the year, check the connection on (-) at the coil leading sold for older 7's , the newer ones check the (-) on the trailing side coil

Pretty easily, the ignitors screw on to the outside of the distributor. Remove the screw, pull straight out on the ignitor to disconnect the electrical connection, push another one into place and screw it down. The factory uses some white heat-sinking compound on the ignitor, but I don't generally reapply it, and I've never had a problem because of it. Try connecting the tach send wire to the other coil's (-)terminal and see what happens with your tach. Don't worry, you won't screw anything up, but that WILL tell you if it's the ignitor, or the tach itself. Good luck! -WG

BTW: Anyone know if the 83 uses trailing as the trigger for the tach? I beleive only a 79 used leading for tach, I know the 80 used that funky box... So 81 up was trailing trigger?
