Does Anyone Know How Many Gsl-se's Were Produced For North America
Or Just A Rough Idea?

Last time I checked, Canada was in North America. So, that's 8 + mine = 9.

I haven't heard the actual numbers and have always been interested myself. I do remember a thread where someone had some production numbers in a book or something, but never posted the actual numbers.

most relevant result was "approximately 15%" or ~15000

so Since you all are pulling out these numbers, where did you find them? Cause I would like to know the GSL production.

You might not ever find out exactly how many there were.
According to the Calender Year Sales specs in the back of my "RX-7 History" book,Mazda never released specific model sales info.
For the record,there were 55,696 RX-7's sold in 84 and 53,180 sold in 85.
The 84 numbers were a record for 1st gens and second only to the FC's first year sales in 86 of 56,243 units.
The bump in sales of 84 cars might be due to the GSL-SE being introduced,as the 12A equipped cars were mostly unchanged from the 81-83 versions.Car sales numbers will typically get lower as the model nears the end of its production,so the spike in 84 is kinda odd.

 

Unchanged, except for the altered suspension geometry, vastly different interior, uprated stereo option, and availability of power steering.

You know, minor differences.

I think the power steering thing was a biggie. It was optional on the GSL and GSL-SE models. I have seen quite a few manual-steering SE, but every single series 3 GSL I've seen had power steering and cloth interior. My conclusion is that people who wanted the best model got the GSL-SE and optioned it as they saw fit. People who were just concerned with having power steering bought the cheapest model they could get with it: a cloth GSL. There wasn't much other reason to want a GSL: the lesser-trim models were still fairly well equipped, and if you wanted performance the -SE was available.

Before you point out that the manual steering was still very light, I've had a few people freak out about getting an RX-7 because they equated manual steering with a very heavy feel, so they eliminated it early on just from the spec sheet. You can't sell a car if you can't get the person on the lot in the first place.

 

Timely post.....I actually emailed Mazda for the same info earlier this month. They replied that they do not have specific data on the number of GSL-SE's produced....just the total number of 7's for the year. That's a bummer....if the data were available I do think the lower number of cars produced would help increase the value of the cars. Limited production typically = more $$. Kevin

mazda usa wasnt formed yet, so each region shoud/might be different, around here to find a GSL with p/s its almost certain its automatic and leather.

the -se's seems to either be ps or leather around here too, a little rare to have both

 

ive had 6 gsl-se's FTW

 

I am on my 5th one, so are we up to 24 now?

 

There aren't that many SE's in the registry, so some of you guys have been slacking. Get over the the non-tech section, check the stickies, and get yourself registered, fools.
