GSL-SE motor all its cracked up to be?
I feel kinda dooped.. I always wanted a se had plenty others in the first to second gen range got a hold of a 88 clean vert but was to slow so i bought a half cut jdm s4 tII for swap... yanked the vert stuff...I'm getting ready.. my birthday ina few days I come across a clean i mean clean *** se wit 205,sumn on the odometer garage kept old guy first owner even had the invoice for damn near 19k 84 model....wifey buys it fa ya boy So you know vert on back burner ......TO THE POINT....
Car drive hard I'm doggin her no slip in the rear yall know what im talkn bout..So I call mazdatrix tell em I wanna give her new life even tho she aint dead..should i go with a s5 motor still keep the se FI? mind you I tell them no more swaps for me...they say u wont gain to much hp doing this unless you get 4 port with carb or expensive efi...vert kicking my ***.So I was told by a couple builders you could beat on the se motor pretty hard sum of them owning them b4 Im not tryna drift or drag So i get the basic all new seals they checked out my rotors said they were beutiful (after 205k) year warranty THEN Im bored one night people on here dont seem to care to much that the se has 3mm seals and i guess a couple other different thing than the 86-91 6 port.. I wanna know was I missled about the se or is just big brakes and posi ????
My bad fa runnin off at the mouth feelin that feeln and got a couple in me
Shoulda stayed with the vert

what i THINK he's tryin 2 ask is if it's a good strong foundation for 2 build on i.e. strong tranny, rear end, chassis, etc etc....in my very honest opinion tho, if it was a 1owner car an your the 2nd owner of such a mint lookin car i would not modify it at all that's just my 2cent's right there tho

Have all 12 of your posts been this difficult to read? J/k... to the new guy.
You'll find that there are a number of -SE fanatics on this site, and I can be counted among them. The SE engine is a 13b with 135HP/135T at the crank from the start, mostly from the benefits brought by the larger displacement, but also due to the Bosch L-Jetronic EFI system with outdated - but still effective - Air Flow Meter, heavier rotors (due to larger width), and updated engine sealing including the 3mm apex seals that you eluded to in your post. The SE engines have been used as base models for turbo engines in the past, but care must be taken with the side housings used, as the SE motors have the engine seals in a different location than 86+ 13b's. As long as you're not mix-and-matching an engine build project, you should be fine with minor modifications.
What made the SE's faster or better than previous models was the engine, but also drivetrain (4.09 rear gears), 4-wheel VENTED disk brakes, larger stabilizer bars front and rear, larger (and wider) 195/60/14 tires (originally Pirelli P6's), and the front-mounted oil cooler which is superior in function and reliability to the 'beehive' cooler used in all 12a FB's from 81-85, with the sole exception of the SA's in 79 and 80.
That said, you have a good driver in the SE that you describe.
You may also find that you'll get better responses to your posts here if you take a little bit more time with your chosen language and step away from the 'text message' formatting, as this might be a turn-off to getting more people to reply. HTH,

Well I have both an 85 SE and a base 85 GS and enjoy driving both as much as the other. The base is quiet as a mouse and a pleasure to drive, you feel the difference in weight and with the narrower tires it steers like butter. My SE on the other hand is fast and aggressive and fun to drive in another way. Kind of like jekl and hyde

So basically you are looking to compare the SE engine to the 2nd gen engines, right? There isn't that much difference. The SE is most like the S4 engines ('86-'88). There are some differences like 3mm vs. 2mm seals, different location of the water seals, different intake... The S4 engine makes about 11 hp more in stock form, mostly due to the difference intake. You can always adapt a newer intake to your SE.
The S5 engines are a bit more advanced. Lighter rotors, higher redline, even further improved intake, better AFM and injection setup... These make about 25 hp more than the SE in stock form.
There is debate on the whole 2mm vs. 3mm seals. The 3mm are stonger, but the 2mm seal better and probably wear the housing less. I don't think it is that much of a difference, though.
I think the SE is a good setup. It is a lot lighter than the vert and is the quickest NA RX-7 in stock form. If you want some more 'go' for it, look at upgrading the exhaust 1st. You can later upgrade the intake and other things as well. You could have gained some power if you had them port it while it was open.
Anyway, the SE is a good engine. Yes, there could have been performance upgrades done while the engine was open, but those cost money. It all depends on what you want to invest. I would just enjoy the current engine and make upgrades when you can. When this engine gets tired, you can open it back up and make more internal mods at that time.
Hope this helps.

How fast was your SE at stadium, on the old track my SE went 9.5 with cheater slicks, full exhaust and a cone filter. New track it went 9.8 with the same mods.
