GSL-SE gas tank help!

So this is my current nightmare. Open to suggestions, besides "but a new tank". Don't have $650+ right now. Thank in advance.

First off - great video! If more people showed up here and posted videos of the problem they were trying to solve, I'm sure they'd get better solutions.

That said, you need a new tank, dude. The liner that's flaking on the inside looks to me like a failed spray-in liner from the previous owner. The original tanks don't (to my knowledge...) have any kind of plastic which would degrade over time and cause that kind of flaking. Regardless, the fuel pickup screen should have prevented any of that from making it through the system into your fuel filter.

While the Mazdatrix lists the 13b fuel tank right now at $523 (*+shipping) which is cheaper than the $650 you list, it's still not cheap. You could try a local gas tank place and see if they have a way to dissolve the liner fully using some kind of chemical, and then reseal it - but your next bet is probably a Pick-A-Part tank from a 84/85 model year 12a or 13b - which seems to share the same tank design. If you go with Mazdatrix, know that you're getting OEM quality for that amount of $$$, and it will have the Mazda factory stickers on the packaging. At least this one is still available through them for the time being.

Good luck, and let us know what you end up doing,

Just remember that a GSL-SE tank is the only baffled tank available for FB's. So I'd say try to save this one at all costs.

Check around and see if you have any old-school radiator shops in your area. They also provided gas tank cleaning services (I think they cleaned them in a muriatic acid bath that did a great job on the tanks. Good luck!

Thanks everybody. I found an 84 non -SE tank locally for cheap. It still needs some cleaning, but not like mine. I'll keep you posted on that.

I am no expert at video taking, but it got my point across. 😊

I definitely plan to try and save my tank. But now I have more time on my side to work on it and/or figure a "battle plan" for it.

I appreciate the offer Vinny 1985, but the hassle of prepping something like that to send it safely, and not incur the wrath of the postal service?! I don't know. But thank you wholeheartedly. Thank you all. I will keep you posted on this.

You can check out what I did under the General Tech section, where I posted videos of what I did to clean/save it.
I did look at the vinegar option, but mostly for "de-rusting" after wards. But decided against it because of the etching of the metal. Thanks.

This is also why you never run your gas tank totally empty...

You can get kits from companies like Summit Racing or Eastwood. They come with cleaners and a coating to line them. I did this with my 5 letter and it turned out swell.
Be careful with the MEK. That stuff is nasty.

A YouTuber I follow used Purple Power or something to clean out the huge amount of gunk in his Silvia's tank that was causing it to misfire a lot, and then let vinegar soak, and then dried it. Safe to say that his Silvia is running great again with no big issues fuel wise.

I think it's called Purple Power or Purple Magic, something like that.

Yes, sir. I heard about the purple power. Unfortunately, that would not have done much against the RedCote coating. I pasted the link for a post with crappy videos I made of how i took care of it. I do have a spare non -SE tank that I do plan to use degreaser in, since that one does have old gunky gas. Just as a spare. Hope the link works. Thanks.
