Gsl-se cranking but won't turn over

My 1985 gsl-se will crank but won't turn over. It will only start when i spray starting fluid into the air cleaner and even then, it will only stay on for a couple of seconds. when i put the keys in the "on" position, i do not hear the fuel pump clicking. I only hear the clicking when i'm cranking the car. I have tested the electricity with a standard voltmeter (the ones used in homes) and there seems to be no electricity coming to the fuel pump..i believe this might be a fuse problem, but on my fuse box, there is nothing about the fuel pump.....i dont think i need a new fuel pump yet becuz i have tested it with electricity and i hear it pumping.....can anyone help me?....also my headlights will flip up but won't turn on, only the high beams work...does this also have anything to do with the fuses? are there any wires that might be loose, if so, where are they?

It could be a number of things.

1: the GSL-SE will only run the fuel pump when cranking or when the car is running. There is a test connector (has a rubber boot, near the air filter). If you put a jumper wire between those terminals, the pump should run whenever the key is 'ON'. This might help for testing.

2: check for spark on trailing ignition. The ECU gets its tach signal from trailing. If no spark, there is no signal to fire the injectors.

3. check all 5 fusible links (driver front strut tower). One could be blown causing no power to injectors and/or ECU.

4. there are 2 black wires with ring teminals that need to be grounded. These are located near the set on vacuum solenoids on the engine. If these wires are not grounded, you won't get fuel.

5. there is a yellow connector under the windsheld washer bottle. Make sure it is plugged in. It carries the tach signal from the engine bay to the ECU.

There are several other possibilities, but this will give you a start.

Check here and download the '85 FSM. You will want to check section 4B and section 50 (wiring diagrams).

As gsl-se addict said, check the Fusible links. The terminals on the links and those in the box can become corroded. Removing the links and cleaning all the terminals and connections on the box might solve your headlight problem as well as other issues. If the headlights still do not work properly, the contacts in the combination switch may be dirty. To fix this you can disassemble the switch and clean the contacts http://intertron.com/ron/combo.html or use contact cleaner spray https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/easy-fix-4-your-headlight-headaches-418572/

Lots of good no start info on the FAQ page https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/1st-gen-rx-7-faq-page-237777/

Some historical info would be helpful. Was it running OK before and this suddenly happened, have you done other recent repair work, has it been sitting for some time, did you just buy it?

lol funny thing....i bought it and it ran perfect for about 4 days....then it started sputtering after 4 rpm when i drove....i replaced the fuel filter which was clogged with sand, bits, and pieces from the gas tank....i removed the gas tank to get it professionally cleaned....i also removed the fuel pump to wipe it down.....i put the gas tank and fuel pump back on and try to start the car....but no fuel is getting into the engine and the car wont turn over without starting fluid......i hear the fuel pump clicking when the car is cranking

Have you disconnected the fuel line from the engine, put the end in a container and nothing comes out while the fuel pump is running? If so, sounds like your fuel pump might be bad. Are you sure you got the right hoses hooked up to the right places when you reinstalled everything?

Was the fuel tank sealed after it was cleaned? If so, the filter at the end of the pickup tube may have been sealed also. You may need to pull the supply/return unit from the tank and check the pickup tube. You can also jumper the fuel pump relay, which causes the fuel pump to run as long as the key is on. If pump doesn't come on, it may be toast.

post a want to buy ad in the appropriate section for everything you need. i would buy the clutch kit new and probably at least one new hatch strut(left side) the right side may be next to impossible to find. you may have to search the threads, as someone was able to frankenstein a bare strut for a non rear wiper strut and make it work for the hatch with wiper.
