GSL-SE to Carb conversion problems...

OK so here is ArmyOfOne posting from Kettlman's house.

I just did a beautiful Bridgeport 13B with the Holley setup and installed it on a GSL-SE that was originally fuel injection. I have the following problems...

The fuel pump only runs when the key is on the position to start.

The engine will not stop when the key is turned off.

Don't know which is worse, that it wont start or that it won't shut off. Lol.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Gonna sound strange, but when it won't stop, depress one of the power window switches. You need to rewire the fuel pump to run with the ignition in the on position, I had the same issue, don't recall the wiring details though. It has something to do with the computer. Hope you are running an adjustable return style fuel regulator.

There is a jumper wire that you need to install on a plug in the engine bay on the passenger side. That will allow the pump to run when the key is in the 'on' position. You can search to find the info.

As far as the engine not stopping? You got me there! Bad ignition switch possibly?

That has to be the best electrical woe and solution combination I've ever heard.

It's possible that the engine keeps running from alternator power the switch or anything else for that matter could be feeding the field enough power to make the alternator charge in the off position and that could keep the engine running, a quick flick of the window switch would be enough of a draw to stop the alternator from charging and the engine would die . Just a thought

An easy way to check my suggestion would be just to pull the two wire plug on the alternator when it is in won't shut off mode ..

Well guys I attempted the jumper wire on the fuel test connector... no dice. I will just run a relay with switch power for it being drawn off the ignition. I do not want to tear into this wiring harness as it it the best example of a GSL SE I have ever had my hands on. So I'll just do the independant wiring for the pump.

Thanks and I will post on the shut down fix once it starts up consistantly. Thanks again.

If you cut yourself, what's the first thing you think of.

Get a bandaid.

If it's bleeding bad,

get the duct tape.

If you see bone or muscle,

now you gotta get stitches.....

It just so happened that when mine wouldn't shut off one day, my kid forgot to put up his window and hit the switch, wow it shut off.

It's been my solution ever since....

i just installed a dellorto 48 on my GSL-SE and had the same problem (fuel pump would not stay on). to get the fuel pump to stay on when the ignition in the on position i had to use the jumper (fuel pump test procedure). it works like a charm.

EUREKA!!

The issue with the jumper wire is that you have to ensure you ground out that part of the harness that normally gets grounded under the rat's nest. This being ungrounded was also causing the coils to get 12 volts with the key out of the ignition! That is why it would not shut off.

I really appreciate everyone's input as it made me think through the problem in a very localized fashion. The customer loves his car and I did not have to butcher it to get it to him. It is a beautiful feeling.

Thanks again.
