Question gsl problem

I have a 84 gsl that starts but I can't get it to idle any higher that 3500 rpm's. It runs but very very slow and only stays on with idle at about 1500 rpms. Does it seem like a timming issue or a bad engine? Thanks

Check the fuel supply first. If the fuel filter hasn't been changed in a while, change it, it's less than $5. If that doesn't help, check your fuel supply at the carb. Check both pressure and flow.

If those are good, check timing. Make sure the plug wires are going to the right places. If that checks out, check the compression on the rotors.

Please explain. Why do you want it to idle at +3500 rpms?

If you mean you can't get it to idle any lower than 1500 rpms, that it dies if you try to set the idle to the correct setting, then you need to check for vacuum leaks before you mess with timing, fuel mixture, etc. Use the search button and look for threads on vacuum leaks. Some tips: check the hoses on the rats nest. They get brittle after 19 years. Check the big hose from the intake manifold to the #2 AAB (passenger side of carb at the rear of the carb). It often splits where it bends 90 deg near the intake. Examine the vacuum hose routing diagram on the hood or in the Haynes manual if you're not sure all the hoses are connected properly. Make sure all the nipples on the carb are hooked up to something.

If all that checks out, look in the FAQ for carb troubleshooting and driveability tips.
