Yes. You could just swap the pumpkin.

depends on the year of the gsl rear vs your rear (axles might be different). I am installing a 82 gsl rear in my 85, and have to swap the whole rear (and use the 85 driveshaft flange). I am still looking into the brake lines.

might want to think about replacing bushings while you have it all tore up. if the years are the same it should be a strait swap.

Ahhhh, disks.
I think the proportioning valve may need to be changed, as well. (?)

You may want to consider the GSL rear caliper emergency brake cable assembly.

I am doing the swap to my '81-GS using an '83 GSL rear axle assembly and this is the final component to purchase before I implement. I am still cleaning / painting my stuff, atm. It's all ready; looking quite pretty, except I am considering new front calipers / turning front rotors, too, as I'll be bleeding brake lines, anyway. Git 'er done!

the good o' axel swap. i must've done it 4 times.

heres a check list for the swap to make it simple:

proportion valve
rear end
ebrake cables
brake line splitter valve to the rear

redline diff fluid + additive
brake fluid to bleed brakes

am i missing anything?

Am I wrong to assume that we can use the '81 -'82 brake pipe valve with the '83 GSL system, as well as use the '81-'82 proportion valve hardware? I've done alot of reading on this subject in alot of forum discussions, but have yet to do the actual swap, myself. I plan on getting good photos and do a write up as I do mine as a reference for others.

I'm interested also, as I have the complete 82 gsl rear axle assemble (with disk brake hardware) that I got from a junkyard. The e-brake cables are cut, so I am guessing i need new ones (or can I use the ones from my stock 85 drums). I did not know that a proportioning valve was necessary, but it makes sense. It looks like I need the new cables and proportioning valve, but what is the splitter that was discussed above?

i paid $250 so $200 is good but i got screwed also...because the brake calipers are seized and they just cut the lower bar that mounts the rear end so im going to reuse mine i have now....
