GS differential question

Whats up guys? New to the RX-7 world and to the RWD world too.

I recently purchased a 84 RX-7 GS with about 145,xxx miles and its making a winding noise from the diff i filled it up with fluid and i noticed the sound left for a bit but came back. After leaving the car parked for a couple weeks i noticed it is leaking diff fluid.

My question is can I save the diff or should I get a new one?

Also have a issue that when I rev my my car it dies when the RPM's go down. I searched and I think i have to tune my carb? please point me in the right direction, thanks guys.

Welcome.

In my sig is a link to the online FSMs, carb manual, etc.. Download and start reading.

Put the car up on jackstands, under the rear axle housing, start it up and find if the noise is coming from the diff or the axle bearings just inboard of the backing plates for the drums. Where is the leak coming from?

As far as the differential goes, if it is leaking at the diff then you can pull the cover off and re-seal it. Personally, I would save up about 300 bucks, and look for a GSL rear end to swap in. That gives you a LSD rear end, and rear disc brakes. I did this a couple of years ago, and the LSD makes the car so much more fun.

For the carb tuning issue, Sterling has put together an excellent step by step guide to walk you through the process of tuning your idle. Take a look over at www.sterlingmetalworks.com and you will find it in the Tuning section.

Good luck!

Another thing that you need to remember when you put a LSD in your car is that on the standard 185/70R13 all seasons, the rear end is very twitchy. I did a 720 across traffic because the concrete entrance ramp was damp getting onto US-131 coming out of Kalamazoo. If you go LSD, then tires should be your next upgrade.

Also, you can find a medium mileage (100k or so) drum brake rear end for 50-75 on the forums. If you can find one close, just buy it and stick it in for now until you can get the cash around for the LSD.

That's weird Whitey. The LSD greatly improved the stability of my car. The rear end is much easier to "kick out" than before, but at the same time it is totally controllable. I think you may have had another issue going on besides the LSD...

Figure out where you're leaking from - exactly - first. Could be something no more complicated than a drain plug that's not seated.

Possible leak points from the center of the diff are:

Drain plug
gearset-to-body gasket (or missing/loose bolt!)
Filler plug (esp if overfilled or if the top vent is plugged)
Input shaft seal

Of these, only the input shaft seal is "hard" to replace. The body gasket involves pulling the axles but otherwise is pretty cake.

If it's noisy only when low on fluid, there's likely nothing serious wrong with the diff itself.

Thanks for all the help guys! I was reading the sterling website, actually read it a few times over, as soon as i get a chance ill look at the car again. Was also thinking that I should save up for the LSD, im taking this slow because I'm not driving the car for awhile until I get a few things sorted out.

When I get a chance I'll post my progress.
