Grinding from rear during turns
Well I searched around but can't find anything on the exact condition I have. I have a '83 GSL which makes metalic grinding when making turns. It's coming from the rear. I put on new rotors and brakes in the back but still the same thing. It does not matter if you hit the brakes or not. Is it the LSD?

I read your email
Try installing a high quality synthetic gear oil in your rear. I had a shuttering outa mine when I turned but after I installed Redline 75w90 with the built-in friction modifiers the shuttering went away. Good luck!

Could be bearings.
Or, try changing the diff fluid anyway, you may get evidence of a stuffed center. If you get bits of metal coming out in the fluid you'll know for sure where your problem lies.

I'm going to dump the fluid and check for metal. I don't think it is the axle bearings. Usually they roar and get louder when you load the car from side to side. My car is silent until you make a turn, then grind-grind.

Get under the car and check out the drive shaft. If the rear end is out(as in the car has been bumped or something), and your car is lowered, the drive shaft can rub on the tunnel. Mine did this when I started autocrossing. If so, check out your Watts Link, might be bent??

I know that the rear swaybar link is disconnected on one side (rusted off). Would this cause the grinding? Sounds like I need to take a good look at the axles and rear.

Well I dumped the fluid and it was perfectly clear. And all the links look good. There is some evidence that the rear leaks from the seals but it was full of fluid. Car still makes a metalic scraping when turning. I am baffled. I may pull the axles or just take it to Mazda...
What does it sound like when the LSD goes bad?

My '83 GSL started to make a simliar noise within a few months of bringing it home form the dealer. I have had it checked at least a dozen times in the almost 20 years I've owned the car and not one mechanic can figure it out. It mostly happens in very warm weather, while making a left turn - sounds like rear (disc) brakes rubbing or vibrating.
Brake pads have been changed, dealer changed entire rear braking system (when the car was new under warranty), rear differential fluid has been changed (including the special limited slip additive). Sorry I don't have an answer for you.

It sounds a lot like the LR rotor is scraping against something when I make right turns. I'm going to pull the wheel and rotor to see what's up...

Like I said before, it sounds just like the bent axle I had. Try jacking the rear-end up and running the car in gear. That way you can watch the rotor to see if it appears 'warped' or if the caliper is pulsing as the rotor turns. If it is then you probably have a bent axle.
