Grinding noise while decelarating

When i let off the gas while in first or second gear im getting a strange grinding noise from under the middle of the car it seems. I jacked the car up and checked the rear universal joint and where the drive shaft and diff meet. There is no play in either. Do any of you guys have any ideas what it may be? The car is a 82 gsl.

The growling noise is probably from your transmission, I would say that it might be excessive backlash causing the gears to growl without a load on them. But I'm not 100% sure on that theory.

I'm with DemonSpawn67. I've had a few trannies that have had that problem to varying degrees. Even the one that's currently in my FB has some light noise on deceleration, but not enough for me to care about. There was one in particular that I used for a while when I had stock exhaust that was as loud as the engine under power, and just irritating on decel.

I just got a tranny today to replace mine. But this noise is very loud metal on metal sound. If i push in clutch it will coast with no noise then as soon as i ease clutch out the terrible grinding comes back. Hopefully the tranny swap will work.

Out of curiosity do you have the same noise on acceleration as well? im am having alot of noise on acceleration and decel in first and sencond gear no probs on 3rd and up, kind of curiouse to see if it is the same problem.

O and a side note there is a good deal of heat coming through the shift boot.

Well i got the car on stands again and had the car in first and got a friend too make it make the noise. From what i can hear its coming from the middle of tranny or rear. I got a new tranny so i think im gonna try swapping this weekend and will update afterwards.

Did you swap yet? I have a very similar sound but mostly in 3rd.. One of my instructors races Spec 7s and said it sounded and acted like a pinion bearing. i'm getting ready to pull it apart to see how it looks

I swapped it and the noise is gone. Turned out the input and output shaft bearings was destroyed (missing ***** that i guess took out fourth gear). That caused both shafts to be able too violently move around. Outside of the car the shafts had over an inch of up/down play.
