Grinding?

When bringing the seven to high revs, say between 5-7000, I get this strange. . . . scraping noise.
I really don't know how to explain it. Like a grinding scraping noise. Almost like the reverse sound, but coming from the motor (for SURE).

Mechanical secondaries, streetport.
Tuned it up the other day, oil, plugs, filter. It did this before the tune up though.

Fast or slow scraping noise, and where does it sound like it's coming from?

From the engine. . . . LIke. . . . almost a winding noise? It sounds almost JUST like the reverse noise, but from the motor.

Loosen up your alternator belt and try it again....Could be alternator bearings, or maybe water pump. Good luck!

Sounds like you pinched a needle bearing when assembling the motor - or if you ever removed the front pulley.

Hmm. I didn't rebuild this motor, it was the Original owner that did that. I've also never removed the front pulley.

I tried loosening the alt. belt, and this remains?!

Brenden, you should KNOW that I don't have synchros. This is not coming from the tranny, it's . . . . it's almost like it's around the exhaust/intake area.

This better not be a prelude to darker things

Okay, let me also say this.

There are ZERO performance problems with this motor. It smokes blue on startup, for about five minutes, then it goes away. It comes back occasionally when I put down on the throttle, but nothing my 323 with bad head gasket doesn't do.

There is never any abnormal smoke or noise, other than this?

Jey worries. . . .

Hmm, throwout bearing? Starter not disengaging? Does it still do it with all belts removed? Can't really think of anything that could grind around the exhaust mani....

Has the engine always made the noise or is this a new thing?

Didn't really want to remove all the belts, the lawnmower belt is a real PITA to put back on

The starter's on the other side of the motor, yeah?

I guess. . . it sort of started after removing the nest.
One day, it was smooth as butter. Then, I started taking the nest off, which ended up taking MONTHS due to technical difficulty.

Hmm, the intake was off at the time too. Could something have crawled in there?

Well, I'm pretty sure I have the vacuum leaks under control now. Like I said, it idles at 900 and is FINE performance wise.

It isn't from the clutch fan area.

Like I said before, could it be some random creature lodged in my ports?

if it was a bug/etc, it'd would be in insect heaven, and would be neatly smothered across your rotors, and would've been burnt to a crisp, then thrown out the exhaust

Well, since this all started when you removed the rat's nest, I'm sticking with the vacuum leak theory...(not that that helps you much).... I hope you find something simple though.

No, most certainly not a vacuum leak. Since I can't DRIVE it, I've been trying to figure this out.

Peice of noisy ****!

My guess is timing is too advanced somehow and sound you are hearing is detonation. I know that I already talked to you about this tonight, but filling the rest of people in.
