Grind in 3rd gear

I'm looking a picking up a 84 GSL, seems in great shape except it grinds going into 3rd. All other gears very smooth. What $$ am I looking at to get fixed?
thanks!

If you do the work yourself, about 250-270.

About 150 -170 for a tranny from the good ole boneyard

and 100-120 for a new clutch , pressure plate, throwout bearing

peace

Actually, I'll be looking for someone to do it. It's more than I believe I'm capable of doing. Again, cost??
Will it need a complete rebuild?

It's easier to just replace the tranny. You can get used ones for like $100, but then there's never a garauntee that the one you're putting in is any better than the one you're taking out.

I replaced my tranny, and it grinds into reverse, but that's the only gear so it doesn't bother me. The clutch was redone at the same time, so it's obviously the tranny, not the clutch. I dunno about yours, though, it could be a mix of the two.

I know I'm gonna have to replace it soon anyway...

Manual trannys are very simple.
you cant even compare a auto to a manu.
At my school, manuals is a 2 week coarse, Auto is like 3.5 months.

I asked my tranny teacher and he said that mazdas have a couple of parts in them that require special tools.

Other than that, manual are very simple. I rebuilt a Miata tranny in about 5 hours.
