We don't know of any documented case of this swap being performed, but in theory the front and rear subframes from the Miata could be installed into the early (1st gen) RX-7, yielding fully independent, A-arm suspensions at both ends of the car. The rear suspension should be a bolt-in affair, while some minor drilling would be needed to make the front subframe work. A little work with a tape measure shows that this swap holds promise.



If they are right about this, I am so there. Going to the junkyard now to find a donor car for the rear and do some of my own measurements. Doh.

and bolt in?....... that sounds to good to be true.

 

By the way it reads, I would say any year, but for me, I would want the rear from a 94-97. It is basically the same diff as the 2nd gen, while the 90-93 utilizes the same basic diff as the 323GTX.

Either way, if it holds true, I am excited. Also, if it utilizes the same bolt points, this may be SCCA SP legal. That is a question that needs to be answered as well, because if it isn't SP legal, then it isn't SM legal either so it would bump us to either prepared or mod classes.

 

mmmmmmm....fully independent suspention. Only the best for the RX-7.

 

How strong is the rear end? I always thougth about the IRS from and older T-bird or cougar. That would be a ford 8.8 made into IRS. strong as hell.

 

i wanted a rear end susp. out of a second gen.....
theres guys with third gen swaps done to them

 

miata rear end cant hold alot of power anyways, turbo magazine show a company ( i dont remeber the name now) that was doing a turbo setup for a 1.8L miata and they blew the rear end in a run with with just 325hp, so if it is strog, probably for N/A setup like 1g tranny

 

I dont see how it could be SP legal. Its a suspension froma different car! Not just struts or whatever. Not even Prepared legal I wouldnt think. Youd go right into Mod.

 

i agree with carl on that. but for people like me who would already be in the MOD class. it would be a nice change

 

The TurboII Diff will swap into the 94-97 suspension, carrier and all with minor modifications. You can find out more about that at www.solomiata.com

I know of a turboed Miata here locally that is putting down 347HP at the wheels, with the only diff mod being a switch to a Kaaz LSD. She did blow the stock Torsen prior to the Kaaz, though.

 

Anybody, look into any further? Are the mounting points really the same?

 

I was seriously thinking about going into debt to try this out, but I can't find any wrecked Miatas in my area. The nearest place that I could find one was in BC, which is a mite too far. For some reason or other, no Saskatchewan wreckers keep Miatas. :shrug:
