GP Sorensen Carb Rebuild Kit W/Picture
GP Sorensen Carb Rebuild Kit W/Picture
For those of you looking to rebuild your nikki carburetor, I thought I'd share a picture of the kit I ordered from autozone.com, as I coundn't find any pictures before I ordered. Part number 96-555, $27.99. Total cost after shipping and tax was about $36. The website says that it ships in 2-3 business days, but it took 2 weeks to receive mine, as they said it was a very 'uncommon item'. It came packaged well, in a padded envelope, and then in a box as well. Included is an exploded view of the carb, which kind of tells some of the parts included in the kit. Luckily, the carb manual I downloaded at foxed.ca, as well as the sterlingmetalworks website have more information on the carb than I'll ever need! As soon as the temp raises a little, I'll be removing the emissions/ratsnest (in hopes of dumbing down the carb rebuild), then pulling the carb.

I rebuilt my nikki carb using that kit this past fall. It worked well. There are extra parts that must be for other similar carbs and the gasket for the altitude compensator was not included. Good luck.
I have heard good things about the hygrade/standard kit, but was having trouble tracking it down.

It's a good kit, but toss the included manual and use the factory carb manual from Sgt' Fox's site.
Much better.
You may find you need to trim the paper gaskets that go outside the bowl sight glasses a little bit - - I did. Looks like they actually gave you two different types of them (lower left of your image) so maybe they discovered a variation since I bought mine a couple years back.
Otherwise everything fit as good as you'd want.

i just bought that kit and rebuilt my carb. everything was self explanatory and went together perfect, aside from the said glass float level seals. My only beef was that I took my fuel rail apart and it didnt come with new crush washers for that... any ideas where to get them?

The sight glass seals are right there in the pic... the two black round items at bottom center. They start out round, even though they mount in a squared-off recess. After years in the carb, they take on the squared-off shape.
Good to know, thanks! I couldn't find those round seals in the exploded diagram, but it makes sense now haha.
However,
Even though every surface was cleaned ALOT, after putting it back together I still have small leaks at the gaskets in places...
Everything was tight, I was wondering if anyone else had this trouble? I have contemplated using sealant but don't think it would be a very good idea, most likely a BAD idea...
Should I continue to disassemble, and reassemble to get everything to seat or what the hell is the problem here. Sorry to be such a noob, but this would be my first complete carb rebuild. Carb works GREAT, just leaks... WTF>!

suggestions would be 1) make sure mating surfaces are still flat, and 2) make sure things are tight but not over-tight, to prevent warpage.
Sealant is not normally used on carbs, mainly because it's way easy for the sealant to accidentally close up or restrict small passages, and part because it would be a brain-cooking job to get it all off later.
I remember long ago, though, people who used gasket treatments like Indian-head (permatex 20539) on carb gaskets.
