got a wake up call....

well... it started sunday at the autox. me and my friend paul were racing, and there is this guy that im friends with, that thought his civic could run faster in the autox than me. he is more into drag racing, and ive been trying to get him to run the autox one time and see what he does. but anyways, we finished the autox, then headed over to my other friend's house for a cookout. we got on the subject of tony (civic driver) saying he could turn faster than me and my friend paul. i wasnt trying to be cocky, but honestly didnt think he could. so we headed over to his house to get him to run a road called snake rd. the road takes about 1:30-2 mins to get down, and its REALLY twisty, and not alot of cars on it. whenever me and my friends go and run, we usually make a slow run to see if anything is on the road, or cops sitting, but we didnt this time, we just went.

im leading, tony is behind me. i got through the first 90* turn, and tony is still there, so i floor it. (his car runs 14.9 in the 1/4, and mine ran 16.1) so he has the advantage in the straights. i got through the first could sets of turns, and hes falling a little back, but my point was to get so ahead of him, he couldnt see me anymore, so i go faster. turns im usually taking at 60-65 im taking at 70-75. then here it is... i come around a blind turn, thinking i can take it. its a little off camber, but its not to tight of a turn, but i enter it at ~65. its a long turn, and as i start to exit the turn, i give it a little more gas.. well.. it was too soon, and all four wheels start to slide. theres a car coming in the other lane as i see the yellow line getting closer to the middle of my car. the car wasnt too close to me, i had enough space to get my car back into the lane safely, but sliding sideways at 65+ was insane, and the stupid thing is.. i kept going. i look behind me and tony dropped back a little, but his *** was still closer than i wanted. i got across the bright that was there, and there is a straight and i gun it hitting 88mph, and tony got to catch up a little there. i take the last few turns and go to a spot we turn around and check our tires. i give him props for keeping up with me because i honestly didnt think he could. we go back down the road the other way, but at 10-15mph. as i come up to that one turn, i see the tire marks from me.. it was insane.

i usually run this road a couple times a week. its not really indangering other people, a matter fact, that one car was the first one ive seen/went into their lane. i usually go alot slower than this one time, and i ALWAYS stay in my lane. but this one time was insane. the worst part of this though, is my friend paul was in the car with me. he is usually running with me, but he didnt have his car. i felt bad for putting him in the position like that, and he said he wanted to tell me to slow down, but didnt want to **** me up. i just remember when we got to the park on the other side, i still had my adrenaline going 20 mins later. i sat in the middle of the parking lot staring at my car.

it was the most irrespondible, stupidest thing ive done. i feel luck that i got this, instead of wrecking as a warning. i needed this though, and i think paul did to, because we were starting to go faster and faster on this road, getting closer to the limits of the car. i dont know if other people do this alot or not, but it should definately stay on the track, i didnt think it was that big of a deal when i would run this all the time, i would just keep the car in the limits, but going around that turn with a car coming really made me greatfull nothing has ever happened.

just thought i would share that experience. its really not worth it...

good, ive learned the same thing. you can push you and your car to the limit, but you cant rely on other drivers to do the right thing

Yeah, I've been there. Thanx to whoever that you survived. And that you didn't wreck your nice car.

My wake up call was trying to pass somebody right into a 90 degree corner, and then freaking out and hitting the brakes midway through the corner. I locked them up and slid off the road into a wheat field.

Escaped with low tire pressure and slightly worse alignment.

Man, I used to be so stupid. I checked the same area out later on and if I would have gone off the road any later or earlier, I could have hit a power line pole, or dove into a steep ditch which would have made my car fly for a brief moment.

We are lucky to learn from our mistakes without learning the HARD way.

Goto your local Wal*Mart and pick up a set of Motorola Talkabout walkie talkies...

Have people at either end of the road and at blind curves to radio you if something's coming... That way at least you don't kill someone else...

I was trying to keep up with my buddies 96 Acura (non-VTEC) on an on ramp one time and we were taking a 40 MPH on ramp at about 115. I had just glanced down at my speed right before the turn and then focused on the task at hand. Anyway, he was in front about 6-8 car lenghts as I had let him pull away so I could have some "room for error", and it was a good thing I did. As we entered the corner, everything was fine, but halfway through, my friend lost his ***** and tapped the brakes. This of course slowed the front wheels more than the rear wheels causing the rear wheels to be trying to go faster than the front of the car now, and they started to come around sideways in a cloud of smoke. I let off the gas as smoothly as possible, and didnt want to make the same mistake so I didnt touch the brakes. Unfortunatly I was now gaining on him rather quick as he slide sideways down the highway at 80+ MPH. He finally managed to get it under control again, and I down shifted and swerved around him as to avoid coliding with him because as I said before, if I touched my brakes, I KNOW my car would have done the same thing. Anyway, its was a really scary thing watching one of my good friends in such a situation. It was a real reality check as to how stupid it was. I have yet to do anything even remotely like that since. That was over 5 months ago. He works at a local race track and frequently takes his car out there. Hes had that stuff happen before, so I have a feeling that may have just saved his life. The moral of the story is, keep your racing off the roads and on the track. We do.
