Got my 12a fired up today, Ignition tips please...

So i got my 85 gsl fired up today (after a long winter) and guess what I found, Im stupid not to have realized what this was before... Im running just on my trailing ignition. I hooked the timing light upto the leading ignition and nothing ahhh feels good because now i know why my car wouldnt run unless the timing was fully retarded at the dizzy. So now my question is what can this be from? Either the ignition coil or the Ignitor right? To determine for sure what it is can I hook a timing light to the spark plug wire coming off the leading coil and test for spark? Wow it feels good to finally know why my car was running like crap, it explains alot... Running of just the trailing ignition...

ThanKs!

it ran like ****, the only way to get it to run remotly good was to retard the timing as far as possible...

Easiest way is to swap the ignitors around and reset your timing. If it starts and runs decent you know the leading ignitor is toast. Same goes for the coils.

99% if the time it's the ignitor. Swap them around and see what happens.

ok so I swapped them, RAN AWESOME for about 1 minute when it stalled but so this means its the ignitor then? Im confused because in vb (im never gonna order one from there) they list it as just one item but then why does only one affect the tach??? Ok so now its time to find a member with good used ignitors... Jeff20B maybe? All i know is i dont wanna buy a $180 ignitor we all know we can get them used for cheap =P

because the tach only reads frin the trailing side of the ignition. if it runs like crap and no tach trailing ignitor if it barley runs and have tach leading. junkyard. and tell them its a relay when you bring it up. I get mine for like $2 each.

So then after switching my ignitors and the tach not working its a dead give away that the one ignitor is toast huh? I wish we had more RX7's around here i could scavenge for parts, but they are pretty scarce, ill have to take a look at the local junkyard one weekend...

Dan, as long as you're going to a junk yard for parts, you should consider the 2nd gen directfire ignition upgrade (check faq for details). It cost me about 20 bucks in parts and 20 minutes to do the install. Nice improvement over stock! This upgrade replaces your lead coil and ignitor, so you should be all set.....

well its quite hard to start her up now... Possible because it hasnt been warmed up in 6 months but after I fire it up she runs amazing for about 30 seconds and just stalls... It doesnt matter how much gas you are giving it, it just stalls... Maybe im trying to use far to much fuel? Thats the only thing I can think of...

edit: Yes I think im also having a fuel delievery problem because after trying to start it I cant smell gas from over top of the carb... And im REALLY CONFUSED because now that I check all the plugs they all have spark with the ignitors swapped explain that one... Anyways i have to go to work but hopefully I can get her running good soon... Can i just pull the throttle cable and see if gas squirts out to test for sure if im getting fuel felievery? Thanks

I blew my lead ignitor on the GSL last month. I could not get it started and as a result flooded the engine. I barrowed my dizzy from the SE and still could not get it started even after purging the gas out (I thought I got most of it). I don't believe my starter is cranking as fast as it should due to its age and my be part of the reason for the no start. I was able to roll start the car and burn off the excess gas in th engine, now it starts as normal.
