Got a GSL-SE today..

Well I've got an '85 GSL-SE now.

It runs pretty well (only took it up to 5500RPM so far). The 5ht & 6th ports may not be opening though as power seemed to fall off a little as I climbed closer to 5500.

It already has aftermarket springs up front, but I'll have to verify the spring rate to make sure they'll fit my auto-cross needs. The rear sway bar has been removed (assuming because they auto-x'd it before). 123K miles... pretty clean interior, but the body needs work. I traded my non-completed/running '85 GSL for this one. Pretty fair deal IMHO.

My plans currently as follows:
- Repair body
- Repaint
- Tokico blue shocks all around
- New gaskets, hoses, etc.
- Full racing beat exhaust (i have most of it, just need headers)

This car will be for my girl as she wants to race with me now so she'll get to pick the color, etc.

It surges at low RPM while accelerating as well - I'll probably need to adjust the TPS. I've included some pics. I'm not a huge GSL-SE buff, so any advice to tune-up or things to check would be appreciated. Thanks.

Awesome find.

Check out this link to download a copy of the FSM for your car.

The -SEs are easy to work on. I've done quite a bit to mine.

I snapped these pics really quickly as it was POURING rain. I got the car from a forum member who drove 3 hours to do the trade, so I very much appreciate it. He detailed the engine, replaced the FPR that cracked and fixed a frozen front brake caliper which allowed me to at least drive the car. It had been sitting for about a year.

I'll snap off some additional pics next weekend (the car is down at my parents place which is about an 1.5 hour drive for me). When I get it tagged I'll bring it up to my garage and begin working the kinks out. I cant get too wrapped up in it though since i have an FC project going on and i'm rebuilding my old turbo renesis for my friends RX8.

Quick ? on the GSL-SE though. The RB exhaust I have uses the street port center section of their "Street port" exhaust, but its for a 12A and has no pickup tube for the 5th & 6th ports... couldn't I just tap into the pipe for that, or should I just wire them open like on S4 FCs? How much backpressure does the SE need?

Don't wire them open. You'll lose a lot of torque. Trochoid has a way to rig up a pressure tube and hose setup for the actuators.

Well on my S4 FC I had a full exhaust and it hardly affected the actuators opening, and I'm curious how reliant the FB SE is on that system? Do you have a link to trochoid's info?

BTW - where in northern VA are you - I'm in sterling.

I'm in Manassas. And, I have just recently ripped off my intake and cleaned out my aux ports and stuck on new intake gaskets this week. Took me about 5 hours tops.

I'm not sure what link Trochoid has his setup in, I'll look around.

Jeezuz - Good deal. Not many in my area with 7's. At least, none that visit this Forum.

WE3RX7 - Here you go. 2 links, they should help you.

Sounds pretty much like my old FC engine - I should be able to work around this.

My first task will be to rip the intake off and redo the vac lines, new gaskets and free the ports up.

I'm hoping to net about 12-14HP from the tune up and exhaust work which will land the car where it needs to be for the small "tight" auto-x courses they usually run around us!

Look into doing the 2nd Gen ignition setup. I did it to mine and the acceleration feels a lot smoother now.

It originally took me 3 days to work on my intake, ripping it off, new gaskets, cleaning up the ports, etc. Now, it takes me 5 hours. The aux ports are extremely easy once you know how to do what.

We just did the ports on my friends S5 GXL about two months ago. I'm used to it on the FC, but all my FBs have been carbed until now, so I wasn't sure what if anything was different really.

I'm thinking about putting the PR inserts in as well. We did it on the GXL and seemed to make a difference.

Once I get the car up to my garage here I'll have to convince some local RX guys to swing out and have a beer in the garage while I cuss this thing out!

More info on the front springs..

These were from the pictures the previous owner sent me of the car before I got it. I cant tell from the pic what kind they are. They look to be possibly Intrax's old style before they made them purple? They have some white lettering on them that I'll have to read to find out.

They are definitely low! The rear look stock, so if anything I might contact Intrax and see if I can get just a rear set, or just get the RB ones.. I might end up swapping them all out for RB. I dont mind the low look though, just worried it wont provide the rate I want...

Yep - confirmation on the springs being Eibach.

I also now believe they are cut though as they sit WAY too low for eibach springs. I dont have an issue with lowered cars as long as they are lowered using the correct methods (IE: coilovers, roll center block to correct the geometry and correct springs rates!)...

Thats why its a project I guess.
