Lightbulb Good info to have

As some of you know from my previous posts, I am replacing the engine in my 3rd Rx-7. It was a welcome home gift from my wife when I came home from Iraq. I use it as a daily driver and I absolutely will not part with it. Well....

I was hoping to pull my engine and replace with a new one I ordered relatively quickly, while I am waiting for the new one to arrive, I looked around the cavity where my engine once was and figured now is a good time to take care of the things that my missing engine affords me the opportunity to do. This is where the 'Domino effect' takes over.

My wiring is over 20 years old and wiring becomes a bit brittle with age, heat, weather, connections frost over with corrosion, etc. Also my front suspension looked a bit rough. Well, I began cleaning up everything and decided to just replace with new stuff. (At this point my wife explained that "We" (like she has a freaking mouse in her pocket) exceeded $3000.00 on a car she bought for half of that. so.... to cut this a bit short, I searched EVERYWHERE I thought for a new engine wiring harness, no such luck. My neighbor told me about 2 websites that offer wiring and some paint from hell that stops rust and withstands beatings from gravel and sledgehammers (like I am going to do that to my car) so I bought some new stuff and am restoring my entire engine compartment and front suspension for the next 20 years of use.

For new wiring harnesses goto: http://www.painlesswiring.com/
Even if you are doing a mod with a V8 or whatever, they will custom make a harness to match whatever engine you have to whatever car you are putting it in.
Also, for the awesome paint that is like armor plating and stops rust goto: http://www.por15.com/
If most of you already know about these, then I just wasted my time and feel foolish for JUST finding out.

I am at work and need to get some humvees ready for Iraq before my boss gets back. Gotta split! -Scott

I wish I had known a long time ago, my last 7 would have been spared the wire mess it had at the time.

I'm considering doing the harness myself, and retain most of the stock connectors, so that I can use stock components... I know most of the connectors use the spade terminals, but what about the multipin ones like between the engine bay and passenger compartment harnesses, they're like 20 pins or something... What kinda crimp on's do they use?

I'm gonna buy the crimp on's and then solder em to new wire, retain all color codes, all factory pinouts, that way I can still use stock woring diagrams.

Harness specs....

I cannot say for sure yet as my harness is being made now.... Ill post back when I get it. (about the pins, etc.)

okay.... just called, was told that all of the replacement connectors are OEM, which is good. My plastic color coded clips are real brittle and I needed those to be new anyhow.

Where can you get wire with all the different colors and stripes on them?

So how did you order it? Do you just say I have an 83 with a 12a and they make it?

If that is the case it sounds really easy and "painless".

Do they color code wires or just the connectors?

How much?

I suspect www.alphawire.com, but you have to call them to double check... I'm going to get in contact with them to see if striped wire is available.

We use some of their wiring at work... I'd really love to get Teflon coated wire as it lasts forever, takes very well to abrasion and chemicals, and you can solder to it without melting the insulation. (You have to get special stripping tools that burn through the Teflon to get the insulation off.) But alas, they only offer it in thin gauges...
