Is this a good deal?
I have been wanting an FD for a while, I have decided that I am going to buy a 1st gen instead though. I don't know much about them and I was wondering if this is a good deal?

He bought a new 12a engine in 1990 and he hasn't driven the car since 2001. He said that there is 100k on the engine and about double that on the actual car.
He said that there is a backfire problem with the car and he doesn't know what it is. He drove it the other day and he said it rode great (but.. obviously he would say that). He is taking it to the smog center on Monday to see if it passes.
He is asking $800 for the car.

rust or frame damage on the other hand is a major PITA to fix properly.

The backfire can probably be remedied with new points. I presently have an 85 GSL-SE, but have owned two 79s and both backfired like crazy when the points were toast.
In fact, my first RX7 was the same color as the above car.

yeah buy the car and sell that bra to whoever said it looks good...
also, if it's an automatic, dont buy it. They suckkkkk. unless you're willing to swap a 5 speed.

Looks like a good deal to me. As mentioned, look for rust and hidden damage. Once you have driven a 1st gen for a while, you become used to the overall dependability of them, and may reconsider the FD, or at the very least, you will likely want to keep this as a daily driver.
That car looks to be in good condition for the price. As said before, look for rust in the floors and in the rear wheel wells. I picked up my car for $500 canadian, but I got what I paid for. Rust was everywhere on my car. I did fix it all, but it was absolutely horrible. Look specifically at the rear wheel wells on the car. Those are the worst spots for rust on the 1st gens.
If the car runs good and backfiring is the only noticable "problem", and there is very little rust, thats a great deal. A 79 in canada would usually go for $4000+ in good condition. BTW, is there an exhaust tip missing? and if you get the car, get that fugly bra off it. I hate those things on normal cars, and they look AWFUL on an RX-7.

Maybe the carb is just out of whack and it is running way rich? That's easy and free to fix. Heh. But honestly, how cool are backfires? I'd leave it. Hahahaha.
I personally wouldn't buy it because I am not a fan of the SA tail lights or dash; plus, if it is infact a slushbox, I would definately pass.

$800 is not a bad deal for a '79 in that condition with a glass moonroof and aftermarket rims. The car being worth it all comes down to what it needs and what you can do. It looks to be a nice car, I myself would buy it, as long as I had something to drive until I knew I could drive that everyday.
It all comes down to your personal situation.
That is a wonderful color on the S1 cars
