ive heard the solid motor mounts will crack the front plate from vibration. is this true? does anyone have any actual experience with it?

defprun, how does it ride? is it more responsive on the gas with the mounts? vibrate more?

Have you ever driven an FC?
If you have how does it compare to the FB 12A?

Just wonderin' cuz I drove an FC last summer until it blew up, but this summer I've got a GSL-SE with a 12A in it, but I haven't driven it yet.

As you can see they are powdercoated red in the pics. The engine does not move at all. But just sitting in the car, you cannot tell that its any different from stock. The thing that you will notice is the steering, it vibrates a bit, but nothing substancial. I just let my neighbour take a ride in it, hes the guy i bought it from, and all he had to say was how much more powerful it was!!!
From what I can tell, there must not be enough vibration to crack the front plate. If you are really that uptight about it, upgrade to a 2nd gens front plate. But I do not think it is necessary at all.

The next thing i have to do is get rid of that play in the steering wheel.

and if you're really thinking about the 2nd gen front cover route, I've got an s5 front cover I'd let go pretty cheaply....

Wait.....

You're telling me, this 100hp engine, is SO MUCH FASTER.........

Because you have spray painted, harder compound, motor mounts?

Not just harder compound. Solid steel motor mounts.

so, how does having solid mounts make the car quicker? does it allow the engine to free up more hp or something? i am lost. i have rb header, 2.25 straight pipe to high flow muffler, no a/c and all that mess, i have 107 rwhp and 105 torque. it's fast, but not shizam! hahaha

Where did you get the mount,And if you put a FC front cover on it,you wont be able to bolt it into the car,for the FB set up..

When the engine shakes back and forth, there is a certain amount of torque lost, basically absorbed by rubber mounts. By putting hardened (or solid) mounts in there, you lessen the amount the engine can vibrate, which lessens the amount of torque lost, and effectively reduces some of the drivetrain loss. On an engine dyno, output is the same, but you will have more power at the wheels.

Its unlkely to produce more than 107rwhp, the same as FB II's car. Any modern Honda Civic with a vtec engine will leave you for dead while carrying their whole family to a picnic.

Lets be honest the RX-7 is 20 years out of date performance wise unless you have had asignificanf transplant such as a boosted 13BT. Just read road tests from 1985, the gen 1 was being outdated.

Playing around with minor mods is not going to have any real impact. To be a sportscar these days you will have to have at least 180rwhp.

On a technical note, I am not certain of any benefits of solid motor mounts and can give reasons they will have an adverse impact. The body is subject to flex so an eqivaent flex in the engine/driveline is necessary depending on power. Stock mounts should work up to about 400rwhp, then careful engineering above that- remember a top RX-7 street car is putting out 500+ rwhp, then engine mounts need to be adequate.

a limiter cable/torque brace would be safer than solid mounts.

Well, maybe I shouldn't reply, because I have yet to replace the motor mounts in the RX-7, but I can tell you from experience (with other cars) that stiffened motor mounts can have a BIG affect on how the car drives. Solid motor mounts are a different story, and you're right, they can have adverse effects, but saying that a mount will "work" doesn't really describe the reasons for upgrading, since stiffening the motor mounts, whether with harder rubber or urethane (or even with new OEM mounts, if the existing ones are 20 years old and the rubber is worn down) can definitely affect everything from throttle response to more precise shifting.

How much the affect is really depends on how the car was designed from the beginning, and like I said, I haven't replaced them in the RX-7, but I have yet to see them NOT improve performance on a car.

I dont plan on really putting an FC front cover on my car. First, I really need to learn how to shift...lol.
I'm still a very beginner at shifting, so the real benefits from my mods arent really being felt, but i did feel more than enough of an increase to justify doing the mods.
Oh well, one day I'll drive an auto equipped stock FB and realise how slow my car really was

Narcisse- I agree with you that worn out mounts should be replaced ,just like shocks. However I think solid mounts would be too extreme as a limited amount of flex minimises shock. This is particularily important for street rather than race conditions.

It is possible to design a structure so the engine block is part of a spaceframe chassis, but you then have to design flex into the drivechain.
