getting a pretty loud "clatter noise" from 5/6 port actuator
the rods on the outside of the 5/6 port actuators are held by washers. Anyways, when the engine is running, these things are rattling like crazy. Really really loud.
If I put one hand on each actuator, the noise is still there, but considerably quieter.
I did some research on this, the only thing I could come up with is loose Pineapple Racing sleeves, but as far as I know, this engine doesn't have them. I did not assemble it myself and I haven't had the LIM off, so I don't know for sure.
After reading the horror stories on the 2nd gen forum with these things I'm scared to run the engine now.

I am in the process of repairing my 6PI (5/6 port) system...had all parts in my hands last night, but am stumped at would would cause the rattling you observed.
Are the actuator arms horizontal - which would indicate the valve/sleeve is in the closed position?

Well I read through the 9 pages, and it seems like there was only one report of the sleeve insert coming loose. If there were others I may have skimmed too fast, but no one mentioned any rattling noises.

As it turns out I couldn't find my camera this morning as I left for work. My car is not at my house, it's at a different location where I work on it, right near where I work.
Anyways, let me give a bit more detail about the car. It's an '80 SA. I had a roughly complete gsl-se that had been wrecked which I bought from a forum member. I just recently finished swapping all the mechanical bits into the SA, and am working out all the kinks before I smog it. The motor is streetported so it probably doesn't even need the sleeves whatsoever, but they are there. The motor had been within the last 700 miles, rebuilt and ported before the wreck. I drove the wrecked car around before I started the swap, and didn't notice any noise like I'm hearing now.
Likely it's my fault, whatever it is.

Well I think the words describe it pretty well, I mean, I' ve been around the garage scene many years now and when a klacketty follows a klicketty, it is usually the fender bearings (on piston cars), OR, it is the sleeve components on a rotary. Definetely the sleeves.

Well I emailed they guy who owned it before I did, and he assured me there were no inserts in the port sleeves. I took a very close look at the setup of the actuators, and I guess the problem is that there's a LOT of play fore and aft where the rod enters the Lower Intake Manifold (LIM). Also the rectangular block that connects the vacuum actuator to the rod is very loose on the rod. So combine the normal engine vibration with the looseness of this linkage, that makes a lot of rattling.
My best guess atm is that the rod is backwards or something. When I have more time I am gonna take it apart and check it out.

The last post on this link shows the rod assembly. The C clip retains the rod. The clip is located behind the retainer, the part that the 2 screws hold on. Maybe they missed that clip.
Question for anyone: The retainer has 2 little arms that stick out. Are these arms actually stops that contact the lever arm , OR, are they supposed to clear the lever arm and act like a guide/retainer fro some reason?

So I took pictures and compared them to my S5 intake.
The pictures are at the bottom of the thread.
The first one is a picture of my S5 intake with I'm assuming correctly installed actuators. The 2nd one is how they are connected on the engine currently.
It appears that the entire mechanism is rotated 180 degrees from how it should be (blue line) Also, I drew in red the movements the assembly is making when the engine is running. With the S5 intake, everything is tight and there is no play. However, there is mucho play on the gsl-se intake.

how tight is the rod in the hole? it seems to me that the more it moves back and forth the more noise comes from the area...

The rod clears the 2 hole bracket by a relatively large margin - I'd guess 0.5mm at least. It does not fit tightly. Wait - wrong part you asked about.
OK -the rectangular linkage that connects to the actuator rod arm: There is little clearance between thos 2 parts. I had to clean off the thin spray paint coating from the rod arm to get my rectangular linkage back on.
