Getting my car running

Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself and see if I could seek some information. I have been working on cars for a long time now and worked on a FC T2 a lot with my friend. I got an 85 GSL from my friend (who is also on this forum) and the car does not run. I have not tried to start it yet because there is no gas tank and the carb is missing a piece, but heres the situation. The car hasn't been registered since 1996, it has 155k miles on it and the engine bay looks damn good (no oil shooting all over the place or anything, just common dirt) My friend said they had the engine turning over and cranking and almost had it running, but never was able to get it running. The rats nest has been tampered with so I am going to do the rats nest removal on it this week. With the battery in it, the cars lights and everything work just fine. The engine does turn over by hand so it is not seized. My concern is to why this vehicle was put in the field?i havent done a compression test yet, but how can I tell if it has a blown apex seal, or will that be with the compression test?

I was just wondering on any general information, I have read the thread dealing with "Bring your FB back to life", but the engine isn't carbon locked, and the oil is good and I am going to flush the radiator. I am just curious as to what might be the reason to why this car stopped running. Is there a common problem that happend to FBs that I should look out for?

Like I said, the engine appears to be pretty decent and does turn by hand, the rotor on the dizzy looks decent as well. Is there a way to check the ignition coils to see if they are good? I am getting this car running for my g/f to drive and I just wanted some input.

Like I said, I am new, this is my first post, glad to be part of the rotary world. thanks guys.

A compression test will give you an idea as to the condition of the seals. Anything below 85 psi is weak and on it's way out, unless the seals are sticking. Take the schrader valve out of the tester and watch for 3 even pulses.

To test the coils, pull the wires off of the plugs and crank the engine over. If you get nice even sparks from all 4 plugs, so far, so good. If the leading or tailing plugs are both dead, start with the wires, cap, rotor and coil first. If those check out, and the wiring is good, then the ignitor is probably dead. There is an ohm test for the coils also.

7s often end up being parked die to simple problems the po's cannot figure out. Flooding is probably the #1 reason, then a dead ignitor or fuel delivery problem.

Good luck with your trouble shooting, keep us posted and welcome to the forum, better known as 'The Dark Side'.
