Introduction

Hi, I am an old timer, live in Virginia and have owned my first RX7 since it was new in 1984. It is a basic S model with a 12A engine and it is carbureted. It is stock and in excellent mechanical condition but the paint and the upholstery is getting worn. It has been stolen twice and recovered but the thieves were not kind to it. It is getting very hard to find parts or get work done on it. Two years ago, I managed to find a parts car for it. The parts car is also a 1984 but is a GSL model and most of the interior is not the same.

I love this car so much that I decided to try to restore it but before I started, I got an opportunity to purchase a cherry 1984 GSL-SE. Everything is in excellent condition except the A/C doesn’t work. This is not acceptable in Virginia. The Mazda dealer has troubleshot the problem to a faulty Logicon Control Unit. He can’t get the part anymore. Of course it is missing in my parts car also. I would be eternally grateful if someone might steer me to where might I be able to find one of these gems.

I used to own and rebuild Corvairs until the last two that I had were destroyed in a flood.

hey whats up everyone my name is mike. i have a pretty thorough automotive background. i went to a community college for 2 years for automotive technology. since then i have worked at a few shops and eventually ended up here at euro experts selling import cars (not just european makes). ive wanted a rotary since i was 16 and this is my first one at age 21. my car is an 85 red gsl that i picked up for 800 bucks! it runs and drives well with only a few minor issues. i just started renting a garage to work on it so i can add some go fast goodies (bp??). im new to rotaries so expect a lot of questions. ive already learned a ton in the 2 months ive had it, but i know theres much more out there to learn. thats it from me for now ill keep it relatively short. by the way im always looking to meet rotorheads in my area. i live in south jersey 10 min from center city philadelphia, so feel free to pm me if you wanna chill or have some insight on my project. thanks guys.

My name is Mike. I'm from St. Louis and just purchased my third first gen. RX-7 two months ago. A 1980 Anniversary edition to follow up the '79 and an '82. The '79 was the best car I have ever wrapped around a telephone pole at high speeds. The current RX-7 will be babied more and only driven sober.

My name is Robby, i just turned 20. i have had my car for 2.5 years. Its a 1979 S. i got it for freeee, my neighbor blew it up in 87'. I just pushed it in to the garage and went at it. when i started i did not know any thing, and taught myself what was going on. well i gutted the car inside and out.

i had the motor rebuilt with lighter rotors and counterbalance, with 3 mm apex seals and heavy springs and its street ported. i had that done by rotorsportsracing.com great set of guys. i then put it back in with racing beat ported headers and intake with a 465 cfm holley 4 bbl, and racing beat 2.5 exhaust and muffler, i put on a aluminum flywheel and street strip clutch. i got rid of all the crap, like air generator and air conditionor, only thing on the belts are the fan and alternator with raing beat double race pulleys. i put in a fuel pressure, oil pressure and water temp guage, which i mounted in my on fabbed console and my own fabbed sender units. i had my seats redone and carpeted. so its almost done except paint.

i have learned alot with my project and hope to get a 1986 next summer for project #2, i think im hooked. once you hear one crank that you built yourself its like nothing else and you have to have more

Ok im new to the First Gen

My name Is Alex Saunders, I live in Cross Lanes, West Virginia. I am going to start my first year of college sometime next spring. The classes I am going to attend are high performance automechanics. ANd hope to open up my own aftermarket shop one day, and do alot of work on rotories. I dont have any real strong points. If I had one it would be that if I own it then I probly ask alot of questions until I know all I want to know. I got my first rotory powered car earlier this year. It was a 88 GTU. And when I got it, it smoked a lot and I thought It was just valve seals. Yeah I know, I know. But I learned from that.

My car Is a 85 base model, I think, just got it yesterday, the only mods it has are the emissions removed. Future plans are a header strait pipe and N1 tip. And a racing Beat intake and an Edelbrock carb. I havnt worked on a carb car since I was 10 and all i did then was give my dad tools. I think i like this car more than my FC. One because I like older cars and two because it is way more simple than a FC.

I have a 1985 gs. I have recently had my nikki carb rebuilt and ported by jeffs auto. He did a great job and is very helpfull. My plans are to put a RB header, cold air intake, replace all the suspension components, and any other performance mods I can afford. I would like to start going to the tracks around the puget sound. If anyone in the area has some extra parts let me know.

have fun yall

Howdy

My names Roy, I just recently bought a 1984 GSL-SE.
My first Mazda. It's in nice condition, a few minor dings, but looks and runs good. It has about 160000 miles on it. It also came with a spare tranny and Set of 15x7 Borbet wheels with nearly worn out Victoracers. (maybe a ew events left in them)

It came with a few mods as the previous owner used it nearly exclusivly for autocrossing.
Modifications from stock:
1982 transmission (shorter 1st, 2nd, and 5th gear)
Bonez "street" pipe and cat
Ground Control 1-1/8" front sway bar
Eibach Pro-kit springs
Tokico "Blue" shocks
Underdrive main and alternator pulleys
Porterfield R4-S brake pads
K&N panel filter

Runs very strong actually, but it's going to need a diff. pretty soon. Certainly before any Autocrossing.

I formerly had a 1965 Mustang on the road, but it was stolen smashed so it'll be a long time before it's back on the road.

Hey, nice to meet you guys. Im Curtis, 19 from South Carolina. I recently got my hands on a 81 12A '7. It was owned by my dad, but he had gotten tired of it and bought him a "new" car so I took the rx7 off his hands. If it wasnt for me it would have never gotten driven to start with, so I guess basically it was mine all along.

Im still new to Rotary's, and dont know alot by any means. I have been reading up, and "doing my homework", if you will to try and get myself familiar with the rotary. I have a junker 12A engine that was sitting in a gully that I am going to tear into and check it out. Im wanting to build the 12A in my car up a little, but still have some reading up to do

I dont drive the 7 right now, as the Ranger is the only thing I have insurance on at the time (good relieable truck that gets really good gas mileage). It helps out alot having a good daily driver so you arent in a hurry and rush things to put a car back together. I have quite a few vehicles (in my sig), all of them but 1 run very good, just need some body work. I always figure its best to have a car that runs like new and do body work as you go instead of having a show car that you cant back out of the driveway. All of my rides are stock except one of my 4x4's which is lifted on 36's, and my Nova which has upwards of 500fwhp (no dyno to prove it so I cant give a good estimate).

Hey, Great to be a part of this forum. My name is Matt, I'm 19 and I live in San Jose, CA. I've been a member since February, but I never had an RX-7 until next thursday, so i thought I'd give myself a formal introduction.

I bought a 1985 GSL from my friends neighbor. I've been showing interest in the car for the past year and a half. He had the car up forsale, but i couldn't afford it since i had no job. So he had the sign up for about 6 months but never got any offers, so he gave up and held onto it until i raised the cash. Well it took me a year, because of college, lack of work etc. So finally i got my previous car sold (82 Cougar Station Wagon) at 7PM and i picked up the mazda at 8. The car is really clean and runs great. It has 167,000 miles and 60,000 on the new engine. By new i mean crate new from Mazda, because their rebuilds kept failing within a week, so they gave him a new 12A engine a few years ago.

Well i'm glad i can truly be a part of this forum.

Thankyou,
-Matt

What's going on. My name is Brian(16) and I just recently bought an early 1979 GS model. The car is basically stock and I have huge plans for it, with my elder brother. The car runs but smokes, exaust, so a rebuilt or a swap would probably occur. I'm thinking of posting pictures during the entire process of the remodeling of this beauty. Well anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself into this Rotary Family. Peace.

what up my name is Ian. I just bought an 84 GSL-SE in decent shape. Right now the car is off the road because it needs a few things. it has a 13B carb motor in it with a lot of Racing Beat goodies, but im gonna swap it out for a Turbo II. I am new to the rotary so i will be posting MANY questions about it, especially since i will be doing the swap over the winter. But if all goes well (crossing fingers) it will be up and running by spring.

My name's Sean and I recently picked up an '84 GSL-SE after a long hiatus without having a rotary in the driveway!

I'm new to this forum but definitely not to Mazdas! Previously, I've owned a few 1st gens, a couple of 2nd gens, and quite a few other Mazdas in general (currently have a 91 MX-3 and 323.) I've worked on cars in general since as long as I can remember, and also spent a few years working at a Mazda dealership as well.

Been working with computers/networks the past few years, and let me tell you - I miss the shop! Hoping my new 'project car' kicks my butt off the desk and out into the garage a bit more

Hey everyone. My name is Thomas and I just bought my first RX-7, it's and '85 GSL. I've never owned a rotary before, but I've been dying to get another car to wrench on.

I think my love for cars started when I was 16 and got my 1976 Datsun 280z. I was lucky in the fact that my neighbor owned a Japanese shop and had an affinity for Z's. He took me under his wing and taught me how to work on my Z. 14 years later I still wish I had that car, but hopefully my new 7 will fill the hole that the Z left. I can't wait to learn all there is to know about my new car and look forward to discussing 7's with all of you.

Car info:
1985 RX-7 GSL
5spd
Brown/Brown leather (great condition in and out)
166k
So far it's all stock, but hopefully it won't stay that way for long.

Hello, the name's Marcus Nizza, and I am a new 1st gen RX-7 owner. Also new to the board. After getting the RX-7, I decided it would be a good idea to join some type of RX-7 community, so I found this place.

My RX-7, sadly, is in another state. Port St. Lucie, Florida, which is where I'm originaly from. Though, I will be back in Florida early October. My way of finding it was from my best friend, whom I will be staying with when I get back. He had saw the RX-7, and immediately told me about it. Considering my love for classic Japanese cars. So, I wired
him the money to buy it, and he will be holding it in his garage till I get there. I have some pictures of it in my vbgarage. It is going to need a lot of work, considering the previous
owner abused it badly.. As you will notice from the pictures, the interior is torn to hell, and
he strapped on a fart cannon to it. My friend on the other hand, owns an '81 Porsche 928, which we also plan to restore. I am sure I am going to love this car, and have fun in the process rebuilding it.

Car Info:
Year: 1980
Model: RX-7
Color: Maroon exterior/interior
Trans: Manual 5-speed

Another noob

Well, I just recently found this group as I am looking into rebuilding my '85. I am a US Army currently serving in Iraq. I have been using the internet to try and research some possibilities for my car. I actually bought it back in '95 which was my senior year in highschool. I drove it for about a year before I bought myself a truck. It had started having some problems and I needed a truck for work purposes. I'm from just outside dallas and I had spoken to a Rotary performance shop there about some of the problems I was having. They told me that the problem I was having was the equivalent to having a warped head on a regular motor, and that this would involve replacing the block. At the time the 2500 they quoted me for a new motor was not exactly reachable. Now 10 years later I just can't stand my car sitting there going to waste. I hope to develop a good working relationship with everyone here as I'm sure to have lots of questions. I appreciate any help that can be given and hope to pick up some parts that I may need or quite possibly a whole motor. I'm not really sure what my options are in that respect. Any way. Good to meet ya'll.

well I guess its my turn.

20 years old here, name is jennifer, married to the greatest guy ( who I have turned to the dark side ). I guess my ex started me down this path. He had a thing for fast cars, and got me interested in high-class cars. BMW's Porsche's and ferrari's became my dream cars. I left my american made roots then. (my first dream car was a firebird, 79 - back before I knew what the difference between fuel injected and carborated) My ex's first car was a porsche 924. He let me drive it and I fell in love with speed. He had a good friend with a 94 rx7, that baby was raw power, sounded like a lawn mower, but would beat anything on the street. I loved it! When it came time for my first car, my parents wanted something my mother could drive if I couldnt make the payments. I got a saturn. I promptly wrecked it, but my parents gave me NOTHING from the settlement, and wouldnt help me get another car.
Then my ex and I broke up (by that time he was on his fourth car - a 94 miata) and my father's friend showed me the light. he told me he had a nice little sports car for sale that I might like. I went to check it out. An 83, ugly as sin, but he promissed me after a carb rebuild, it would purr. I was there every day, removing the bad body panels, and tearing into the engine compartment. My new found friend was a certified mazda mechanic from the early 80's. (also known as a god) A few weeks into my project, I went with him to pick up another 7 (he owns about 20). I fell in love with it- an 85 GSL, and it almost ran. (carb issues again). I convinced my new friend to let me have it, and our carb rebuild switched gears. Three rebuilds later we finally had a working carb. pouring gas through that baby and hearing it run those few precious seconds. I was hooked. It took another two weeks, to clean out the gas tank and such, but she was running and man, did she go. I had her for about three months on the road, and I got rear ended. That was about a year and a half ago, looking for another one to play with now.
I owned an rx8 for a week before the bank laughed at me ( the dealership did the paperwork wrong ), and really, I prefer my 1st gen baby. The only thing is my 6'6" husband cant quite fit. anyone know if I can set the driver seat back any further? We have an 03 honda accord (had to have 6 speeds after the 8) and a nice ricer - an 05 ford focus. One of those will be for sale soon - to make room in the drive way for another 7.
Well thats my story. I'm in love with the rotar.
Oh and I have four babys - two italian greyhounds and two kitties.

i guess im up! well my name is Leo. 22 years old. i love cars period!! i go to college full time. i have an 86 honda accord-mildly modded for my daily driver.

now my 7 is an 85 model gsl. i like to be unique and so i had this vision in mind where i would update/modify/convert the look of my 7. i know not alot of people liked the idea but hey, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" right? so therefore i have this "twisted" 7 that i will eventually enter in car shows. just one of my goals in life that i want to accomplish.

and yes, i do all the work myself. minus the engine part. that is my weakness.

Hi! My name is Jeff. It's good to see i'm not the only maniac in this world that worship these cars still. Nevertheless, i'll be looking forward to posting more on this site (which has already become one of my favorites).

BTW, I just bought my '85 rx-7 base model this year. No mods (yet), with 46k miles (now 50k).

I'll be looking forward to post a lot more in the near future. Thanks, and hope to meet y'all soon.

I just recently became a member of this site, and I have a some questions maybe some of you guys could answer. I own a 85' se, and I was wondering what I could do to improve the performance of my car. Its not completely stock, but I need some more suggestions as to what I could do to receive more Hp or just some general tips. Here is what I have done so far:

- I Removed all emission control systems and al catalytic converters. All that’s left is a straight pipe to the muffler. ( no header/ performance muffler due to unavailable funds.)
- I added a Racing Beat duel alternator pulley. And new pulley belts.
- I removed all sound guards/ installations and Tar from the floor.
- I removed all air conditioning components
- I added a oil over air cooler
- I put in 4 new TOKICO shocks straight from Japan.( Non adjustable but still work great)
- I have NGK spark plugs from a 3rd gen being used.( Witch work Great!!)
- I removed the black funnel and made a custom 2nd opening to the carburetor
- I have a custom stabilizer and torque bar mounted.
- K&N air filter.
- I removed the Air pump ( 1st thing to go)
- I added a performance pressure plate.
- I also lowered the car a bit to cut some air resistance.
- I added a light weight aftermarket wing to the rear for better down force( much nicer feeling when taking the on ramps :P )
- I am currently using Mobil 1 Full synthetic oil ( 10w30 for this time of year)

this all I can think of at the moment. If any one has any more suggestions I would love to hear them. Some considerations im still considering very much so are:
- electric fans
-MSD ignition boxes
- RB Header/Dyno muffler.
- electric water pump.?
- reposition of the battery for better handling.
Please msg a post or email me at panoz_06@hotmail.com

Thanks!

Jon

Well, Jon, other than your synthetic oil (here we go again, sorry), you need to port it, get a better carb/fuel pump combo, and get a good exhaust, and you'll be set!

I'm Kevin. I'm a 32 year old Technical Supervisor at a Veterinary Reference Laboratory. I have an 84 GS which is in the process of being totally restored. It's my third RX-7, having previously owned an 83 GSL and an 87 T2. Thus far, my mods are a removed rats nest and full Racing Beat streetport exhaust. I'm going to find myself a nice blown 12A to rebuild, with a streetport and a turbo. Next mods are a GSL disc brake/LSD rear end, and I've done a couple little "DIY" projects, like a full custom interior and a couple other little things.
