Is it a stumble/stall/bog? and then picks up and runs? Will it pick up rpm's if you pump the gas? Anymore info you can provide on your problem?

i guess you could call this a stall. i really cant pump the gas i can only hold the rpms at about 2000 any higher and it goes lean on my air fuel ratio meter and stalls till i let off the gas. thanks for your help.

So it will idle smoothly? Sounds like an accelerator pump problem. With the car not running, Remove the cover for the air filter, look down into the carb, then either have someone step on the gas, or open the throttle manually and look for the 2 small streams of fuel that should come from the squirters.

Unbolt the exhaust, sounds like the cat converters are clogged. If you unbolt it and it runs good, just take a bigass screwdriver/pole and a hammer to the insides of all 3 cats

How about for starters you post the year and model,
-se? What mods you have done to it. That kind of stuff really helps to know when trying to diagnose a problem.

dunno if this helps but when i got my car the fuel pump was weak, i swapped it with a working pump and it started doing what you described...it also was running rich...i adjusted the r-l screw and all is fine now...maybe the prior owner adjusted that screw to run richer because of the weak pump?...

sorry about not giving any backround.the car is a 84 1.3 gslse 6 port. i have already replaced all vacume lines and intake manifold gaskets. plugs and wires are decent fuel pump preasure regulator fuel filter are all bran new. the r l adjustment screw hasnt been messed with and still has clay stuffed in it.113k miles are on it and the compression sounds good. i did the throtle body mod and tested for leaks.the only thing i really havent done is adjust or check the timing.

mine had the black goo on it too...seems like mechanics or dealer mechanics like to put the goo back so we don't mess with it...i've seen it before in the forum...

mine had very familiar symptoms.. It was hard to find the problem, but in the end it was a ground bolt beneath the 4 connectors.(rats nest) i forget what they all are, but one is fuel regulator connector, and hte others deal with the air pump i believe. As I said above, my problems were similar, but when the car was idling fine, if i tapped any of those connectors, it would die. Turns out it was just a loose ground beneath them. Check that, hope it helps.

It really sounds like a TPS problem to me. This engine uses a 2k deceleration fuel cuttoff. If the ecu thinks that the throttle is closed it will cutoff fuel above 2k. That would definately cause it to lean out. If you hold the rpm below 2k, but off idle is it fine?

i just got finished checking a few things with tha car started and it was able to idle and rev up to about 2000. ive already adjusted the tps with a homade two light three wire device. i questioned the wattage on his lights and he said it doesnt matter . they were small interior accesory lights. i tested the tps w\ a ohm meter it came out ok. do you think i should try to swap it out?
