Has anyone changed the tired old bulbs in the first gen gauge clusters? specifically S2..

What type/size are they? or is it all just universal

You have to take the cluster out. They are in little twist fittings. Not sure of the style but I have several bulbs.

Too much work and they're incompatible with the stock dimmer (I think).

I'll give it a shot sometime within the month. I got nothing to lose, I have no dimmer and I can't really tell the speedo after 80mph.

I believe the bulb number is 194 but you can use 168. If you are looking for brighter than have the parts guy check on the wattage difference between the two.

If you are going to take the cluster out then get a 83 unit. Then you will have the 130 MPH speedometer.

Dash panel bulbs

When I replaced mine I used amber bulbs to get a more modern look and allow a bit more brightness. Biggest issue was finding a Phillips screwdriver with a long enough shaft to get to the screw in the bottom of the cluster.

I still got my spare 85mph here, I have a 140 or whatever in the car now. I will test it on the 85, and if it works, I will do it to the other one

The higher the number, the higher the wattage. I know this because when I had to replace the cab lights on my '98 Kenworth, the bulbs weren't marked of which number. So, I had to match them up. Problem was that there were like 4 different numbers. I went with the higher number, a 922. Needless to say, that one bulb was bright as Hell compared to the other cab lights. So, I ended up having to replace the others with it. I like it, too. I love bright lights.
