Gas Tanks, Did Ya Repair it, or Replace it? Or is it still Good?

Allright Peeps, having some trouble with my gas tank as allways... JB Welded it the firs time, using putty this time.

What I want to know is how many of you peeps have had to repair or replace your gas tanks?

And how ya peeps did it. These are 20 some year old cars, and I know most of you people have had troubles with the Gas Tanks.

Heh heh, bought mine with a leak, and have been working on it since... Ah the joys of owning an old car.

I replaced mine with a used one. Mine never leaked, was just rusty as hell. I had to change my fuel filter every 1000 miles or so. That got old quick. New one isn't rusty, doesn't leak, and I don't have to change that damn filter all the time.

What about the option "24 years with no leaking or problems?" I choose that one as I knock on wood!

24 Years w/o leaking, that's myth!

Yer not the original owner either I'm betting!

I didn't know mine was leaking until I started smelling fuel heavily on right hand corners.

Bit the bullet, dropped the tank, and ?????. Blew all the rust/dirt off with compressed air and there were two holes on the top, near the filler tube, one about the size of a quarter! There were also some holes just starting to open up on the top half of the tank, right at the seam in the back. Mudded everything up with "Plastic Steel", which is a thick two-part epoxy that is much nicer to use for bridging gaps/holes than JB-Weld, which is really runny.

Still not leaking, except through the filler cap on hard rights when I have more than 1/4 tank. But that is extremely minor, doesn't even stain the paint.

After having to de-clog the fuel pickup tube with a bass guitar string chucked in my hand drill roto-rooter fashion no less than three times in a few months, I finally just replaced the tank with a good one a friend gave me off his '79 LE parts car.

No leaks here but it was extremely rusty and gummed up after sitting for five years. I took it to a radiator shop and had it cleaned and sealed for about $50. It was kind of a shitty job what with the dirt, rust and gas falling in your face. I'd say if your going to the trouble to take it out, fix it right or get a better one so you don't have to do it again.

Heh heh, mine had several leaks in that area PJ... Tried JB Weld on it, not that good.

Get the putty! The Putty is good, JB Weld is not... Putty rules!
