Unhappy Gas outtage, went dead on Highway

I did some searching and i assume that it is my fuel filter, or so i hope, but i thought i would post my story and see what you guys think.
The other day i was passing a car and my gas started to cut out for the first time, it was quick but ended with a loud backfire blast. Well a few days after that I was at a red light and a guy wanted to race me. I was only gonna go to the speed limit. I was kickn tha guys, ricer, *** and then my gas cut out at about 6krpm, so i had to shift to 2nd then it cut out at about 4.5k and i was like damnit, then the ricer went flying past me like he was all bad. ironicaly enough, he was pulled over bout a 1/2mile down the road by a police car with him outta tha car and everything, lol. Well back to the point, my car kept getting worse and i was like damnit, to let you know this all happened within a week, so i grabbed some RedLine fuel injector cleaner after reading the majority of people prefered using that. But before i could really run it through my gas cutting was awfull and backfiring started to happen like a routine. I tried running some through and everything but today i was driving and getting onto the high way and it completely died of gas. I had to start 'er up again and backfired to the nearest exit. I had my dad pick me up and drop me off for class, i had a mid-term. Well i went back to pick it up and drove it home. It drove ok, i didnt push it or anything though. When i got home i parked it out in the back cuz i plan to change the fuel filter hoping it will help and thats the cause. The fuel pump, fuel filter, and lines have all been replaced within the last year and a half. I hope this is it. Another thing, i lost my haynes book but it came with a little manuel. Is it easy to replace?
I have an 85 GSL-SE, EFI. thanks guys for any input.

-Edit-Oh yea, just another little tidbit, i plan to do a TII swap sometime next year. Its gonna be a graduation present, and i have several friends that are gonna help me. One is a rotary mechanic. But i dont know now because my dad worries about me and wants me to have a reliable car, so i might be looking at a Rx8 . I will be the one making the payments and such. And at the same time i will be fixing my RX7. ..no g/f anymore = more money and saving. kinda good but also sad...lol

Your backfiring could be the culprit of a lean mixture, which in turn could be your dirty fuel filter or plugged fuel line (not really likely) not flowing enough fuel. Change your fuel filter and if you have access to an air compressor blast out your fuel lines.

I wouldn't say more than a half hour, tops. Hardest part is getting the hoses off the lines if that tells you how easy it is.

well i got under the car to change the fuel filter and to my suprise i do not believe that it was hooked up....I think the people that worked on my car last when i needed everything fixed must have forgot to hook up the fuel filter and went straight to the pump, i guess. I do not, because there were two lines that came from the fuel filter at the bottom and neither had a hose...so i was like damnit. I got work in 4 hours and my dad took my keys to my car-and he works like an hr away from where i live-which i have to drive an hr to go to work. So im just gonna take it to the local mechanic when he gets here, have that nut job do that simple task while i shower and get whatever done....i hope my fuel pump isnt bad..if so then dangit im out like 120 bux..

Part of the GSL-SE fuel system is a pulsation damper mounted to the pump, and also on the forward end of the fuel rail at the injectors - these work in concert to ensure that any pulsations in fuel delivery (since it doesn't compress) will be 'damped' out of the system. Fuel injectors don't like to get fluctuating fuel pressure, and will run best when supplied with high volume, high pressure fuel from the pump.

You HAVE to run a fuel filter, however. The SE filter is much larger, more robust, all metal, and more expensive than a standard 'carb' fuel filter - GET THE RIGHT ONE. Using a carb filter (4-6psi) on an EFI car (27-45psi) will result in a blown out filter and a FIRE HAZARD. No kidding around here, but you probably already knew that.

The fuel filter makes sure that no crap from the tank makes it to your expensive and hard to find and replace, fuel injectors. Don't drive the car until you get the fuel filter back in the system, and hope that your injectors have not been clogged up.

All of this will be exacerbated by running out of fuel, since the tank then draws the crap from the bottom of the tank. Good luck, and report back - we know our SE stuff!

I am buying the right material and having someone put it all on and fix it up. I will keep things posted. I would do it myself however, i have midterms i need to be studying plus i work 40+hrs right now. The guy i know is a good guy and gives me deals. I'll let you know and thanks for all of your guys' help, its people like you that help and inform many like me

I'd install a fuel pressure gauge and rewire the fuel pump.

what he said, rewire it so it gets clean voltage consistantly. i dont have a gsl-se, but i did this on my 12a setup and noticed a difference. also it's peace of mind.

ok, heres an update, i checked on the car and well when i had some people work on it last time to get it working they remounted the fuel filter so it is actually hooked up and anyways replaced it, then i had this mechanic check all the fuel pressures, that was ok, my fuel injectors are ok, my sparkplugs and coils are all doing ok.everything was rewired so im at a stump. tomorrow im gettn it put on a diagnostic machine. does any one have any ideas or suggestions??

I was going to say spark, because IMO, if its backfiring, thats caused by too much unburnt fuel in the exhaust, which tells me its not all burning in the chamber like its supposed to. Also, if thats the case, it could be the oxygen sensor was detecting the engine running extremely rich so it was trying to cut down on the fuel going in to lean it back out, which would obviously kill the car if it kept trying to lean it out too much. I dont know, Im just throwing out ideas, lol.

Sounds kinda like your computer craped out on you. See if you can locate a new computer at a junkyard and try that.
