gas mileage questions

OK, i'm delivering pizza in my SA and the gas mileage is eating me alive. I don't have the speedo working but I know that ~8 dollars a day is way too much for the amount i'm driving it. I had a couple of questions about maxing out my mileage.

1. In an injected car, it's best to coast in gear when slowing down, because the ECU leans it out a lot. Is it the same with a carbed car or should I coast in neutral instead?

2. I have a major exhaust leak underneath the car, causing backfiring problems. Would this affect my mileage (I'm wanting to max mileage before worrying about exhaust.)?

3. How do I know if i'm running rich?

So far, the car has new air/fuel filters, plugs, oil and that's about it. Runs pretty good but has a miss at idle and runs rougher when I turn on the headlights for some reason. I'm still running the points distributor (with same rotor, cap, and points as when I got the car) and I need to upgrade to the electronic stuff from my 84 parts car ASAP.

bro...any rx7 is horrible for a pizza delivery sorry to say. City driving, constant stop and go will pull you down to around 10-12mpg in a 12A motor. No matter what you do you're not going to get good gas milage delivering pizzas.

ick. it's either that or my mustang gt. The rx7 is the funnest pizza car i've ever had, and i'm going to stick it out for a while if I can.

I'm still going to try to get better mileage somehow...

Dude.
I delivered many pizzas in my SA.
I had an exhaust leak that led to severe backfiring (on more than one occasion getting the cops called for shots fired in quaint suburban neighborhoods).
It ******* ROCKED.
Until I realized that there was no way I was going to make enough money on the pizza job to repair the damage that I would invariably do to my beloved SA. Really, I think auto makers should road test cars by giving them to pizza drivers- I know of no other group of people who puts more everyday strain on their vehicles, usually with little to no maintenance.

For the mileage, I recommend the common-sense stuff first- fix the problems you currently know about, become totally **** about tire pressure, be sure your sparkplugs and filters are in good shape, be sure your carb is in proper tune. You can tell if you are running rich by eyeballing a spark plug (leading is the best indicator)- black and fluffy means it's rich, white and crackly means it's lean.

Upgrade your ignition. There was also supposdly something on the ignition of the SAs that only fired the trailing plugs under certain conditions. In my opinion, it is well worth spending 50 bucks or so getting the electronic ign from an FB, and grabbing a FC leading coil for 2GDFIS. In my experience, FC plugs are also not a bad idea (NGK BUR7EQs and 9EQs respectively).
Best of luck.

ditch the points first! they suck.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hlight=mileage

do everything peejay says, ignore the rest.

my SA, which now belongs to NODE, the mileage varied a lot depending on the points, and the idle mixture. with new points, and the lean idle they let you have, it'll get 25mpg highway, keep in mind the car is 100% stock. with bad points, it wants more fuel, and mileage drops to like 16-18

lean the idle mixture screws

use heat range 7 spark plugs

adjust the gas pedal stop so you can only get 3/4 throttle

2 cans of seafoam in the gastank on the first of every month

i think worn points and poorly tuned carb are what's hurting me. i'm going to swap out the ignition with my fb parts this weekend, i just gotta borrow a timing light.

Yes....the leaks will cause major issues with mileage. The 12A SP in my car with modified Nikki gets me 225+ miles per tank. If the car runs well, you should be able to shift at 3500-4000 rpm with part-throttle and get decent mileage (for a rotary that is).

The headlights part is strain on the alternator, either its too weak to power the lights and car or the battery is also going.
