gas mileage... which one is closer to the truth?

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/Mazda1985.shtml

or

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/S...tgen.html#1985

the former shows the 12a and 13b engines with very similar milag, both city and highway.

the latter shows the 12a gets waaay better milage than the gsl-se.

what gives?

Hmmm....

The last MPG I did I got 28.1. Yes, that is correct. Highway only, 70mph, travel distance 120 miles or so. (I know, more accurate with greater mileage).

Some people have complained their SE's and 12A's get horrible mileage. I can't explain their poor mileage, but the MPG I'm getting isn't that much better than the 85 EPA estimates for my vehicle.

Considering the amount of money I've put into this resto, I'd be really disappointed (and mad) if it didn't run/act/behave similar to the original specs for the car.

My 85 12A gets around 25 MPG which is half city and half highway mileage. The highest I've ever had was 31 MPG, which was 95% highway driving moving along at a steady 65 MPH.

The 13B EGI should get better mileage overall than the 12A Carb.

My GSL-SE gives me 24mpg on the highway consistently.
My N/A second gen however only give me 20 mpg even though the engine has 80K miles less than the one in the GSL-SE.

12a mostly city type driving gets me 20mpg. Haven't done enough steady highway to get an accurate number for that. my TA gets 8mpg on a good day

My running average for the last 5600 miles is 17.4 mpg. 85 GSL 12A. I found out one of my ignitors wasn't working, fixed it, same mileage, just smoother. I drive 44 miles to work and back. Stop and go traffic. Spend lot of time punching it when I get aggravated. Takes me 45 to 60 minutes to go 22 miles .

My 84 12a, stock, got 28 to 31 mpg at 60 to 65 mpg. Highway was around 20. I was poor and used to have to scrap change to go to school. I still remember needing at least 2.6 gallons to go 75 miles round trip.

Shoot. My '79 makes 15mpg. Maybe I should be checking that out? I suppose that's all city with warm-up time included, as it is winter time. I am going to change out the points to electronic, should I be expecting an efficiency increase afterwards?

My '79 got 11mpg last time I drove it.... I think it's low on compression... plus, it's leaking oil.... so it's time for a new engine... *sigh*

i've been charting mine for the last few months ... i get 22 to 23 MPG for half highway, half city - still have not tuned the car up yet! i'm hoping to maybe make it to 25 or 25+ ... any tips?

my setup is in my siggy ...

i'm also planning on changing the oil in the tranny and rear to some Redline stuff and see how much that yields.

hey, you live in nanaimo... do you have to do aircare there? if so, I was wondering what performance mods you have.

Im sort of wondering what can be gotten away with under aircare, especially considering the poor emmissions performance inherant in rotarys.

I've got an aggressive street-ported 13B, it's carbed, (the old Mazda pickup rotary-really rare), and it's boosted 12psi, and I still get 22-24mpg highway. Plus I run it at just under half choke all the time.

Here's a question: would doing the ATF thing give me better gas mileage?I would think so, but anyone whose done it chime in on how it affected your millege. My car is an 82 with 90,000 on a rebuild, stock everything, and getting 17mpg on a good day, half city/half highway.
