Thumbs up Gas mileage

I've been complaining about the gas mileage on my GSL SE for about a year now. I haven't taken any long trips since last christmas, and with city driving I've been getting an average of 10 mpg (without driving it too hard). I got it on the highway today (first time I drive most of a tank of gas on the highway since last year) and I got 21.5 mpg! I couldn't believe it.

I know highway mileage should be higher, but not this much higher. I'm a little confused.

Yeah, I try not to do the math when I fill up, but 10 sounds a little low. Last I checked I could get about 15 city with two people and ummm "spirited" driving

84SE: 18mpg city, 22 highway. Pretty common mileage, and pretty close to what the EPA said about this car when it was new.

I like to think that my mods have something to do with good efficiency, but truthfully, there's not much you can do short of Peripheral Porting the engine that will drastically change fuel mileage as long as everything else is in good working order.

Increase mileage by bumping tire pressures up to 38psi, get your suspension checked and aligned, use your cruise control around town, leave ample braking room ahead of you, and avoid jackrabbit starts and stops. HTH,

Well, I just don't understand why highway mileage is close to ok, while city mileage is so crappy.

Thats horrible! You should get more then 10mpg. I have boosted 12a streetport, and I get 12mpg on city streets when I drive pretty hard. With that said, I only usually get 13-15mpg highway(no efi-its a blowthrough), depending how fast(boost) or how many people I decide to pass(which is pretty easy). I suppose if you do more traffic and stop lights, it will be pretty shitty regardless. But if you do that much stop and go, it may be faster to bicycle were you are going.

I would have to say 20 city and 27 highway on my 84 SE. However, I don't drive in true city traffic, only rarely do I drive where you are lucky to get into third. You can also call me the "slow and steady" driver.

mileage

Se's dont like city driving, but 10mpg is in the toilet, something is wrong. Check your coolant temp sensor, sounds like it is defective and telling the computer that it's below zero outside, when mine went bad it did the same thing. Also remember
that your o'2 sensor does not start working until you are in 5th gear so with a continous injection system your just pushing fuel. A wide band o'2 sensor will take care of that problem. Also if you have the stock exhaust, you can increase your mileage with a rb system. rx7doctor

if it is all stock, do you drive it when it (the engine) is cold? is it possible your O2 sensor might need replaced?
