gas leaking from cap

I've tryed searching for this problem but cant seem to locate any information on it. What's causing the gas cap to leak? The car was on empty yesterday so I put 6 gallons in and drove off...when I stopped I smelled gas so I looked around and it had just ran out of the fuel door and down the side of the car. Any idea why this happened or how to fix it.
