You can get at the tank unit from inside the car through the passenger rear cargo bin. I started to take all that apart when my gauge wouldn't work after storage but it mysteriously started working all of a sudden so I left well enough alone...

You are confusing it with your 2nd gen. The fuel sender is behind the driver's side rear wheel, there is a plastic cover protecting it.

Check the wire connections for corrosion, if they look good, pull the unit and ohm it to see if it is in spec, if not, replace, if it is, check the gauge in the cluster.

I would bet that the lower wire of the three is broken at the base of the sender unit, I did a repair on this piece last week.

You can get to it from the drivers rear tire well. Go under and unsrew the plastic cover. The sending unit is held in with 6 screws. Hope that it was not like mine and all the screw rusted to beyound repair. I was dropping my tank anyway so it was alot easier out of the car. Had to drill the screws out file them down, pull the sending unit then back out the rest of the screw with vise grips. Oh, new one from Mazdatrix $111!!!!!!!!!!
