first off, there were no lights in the storage bins or locks. these features didnt come about until 84. now, a GS can have a sunroof, electric hatch release, cruise, etc. a GSL adds rear discs, optional rear wiper, power windows, and a couple more interesting things such as white lettered tires, wider aluminum wheels, optional leather, and digital clock. for note, a GS can be had with rear discs. i had one and no it was not a suspension swap or rear end swap. it was a dealer option, an add on if you will. also, the S model did not have the 2 spoke wheel, they as to my knowledge did away with that in 81. the S could not be had with an auto trans or A/C. the A/c would have to be a dealer add-on. the S did not have cruise, electric hatch release, or a sunshade on the windshield.

81's to early for the gsl. S is most common.. All you gotta look at is the Sun Roof. If so It's the GS like mine. That's basically the easiest way to tell.
