a fun little carb issue

I've searched, and searched, I just can't find the right words to describe.

1985 1.1

Sterling Nikki about a year old, straight from sterling
mechanical secondaries
rats nest removed
carter fuel pump and regulator

I took off the air filter housing because she wont idle right.

While running the front float is full and the back float bowl is half.

The front primary is always going (too much) the back is dry unless on the gas.

The front secondary at idle is dripping every now and again, as the back is dry, unless revved to engage secondaries.

I think its too young of a carburetor for anything internal to be wrong, but it sure seems like it. Maybe clogged? I'm not that much of a carb guy so I can't be sure on how to go about this.

(front is closest to the front of the car, and back is towards the back)

Yeah I thought about that, and it would seem to be the best start... But I'm not going to lie, I can't understand half the stuff that guy is talking about, and it really makes me feel like a dumb ***.

Edit: Does anyone know where to get a new fuel check valve? Seems like no one has them.

Could be also that your front float is sticking causing it to overfill as you describe. Try (when its running and being too full) to tap lightly on the top of the carb and see if after a bit the fuel level is in the middle like it should be. The needles and seats (what controls the amount of fuel in your bowl via the floats) tend to have a break in period and can get "hung up" from time to time for a while.

As in the other thread, yeah check your fuel pressure is low enough. However, normally if the pressure is too high you get the problem on both front and rear not just front. Its good to check anyways just to be sure though.

Yep definitely sounds like the front bowl is flooding, could be that the needles are binding like suggested above, or the seat could have even come loose.

If the tapping trick doesn't fix it, you may have to remove the air horn and check the needles and seats, float rise and drop.. Just look for differences between both sides at first, might be something obvious once you take a peek

Contact Sterling through email or at his forum, www.sterlingmetalworks.com/bymc

Why go anywhere else seeking answers on a carb he built? And if you don't understand what he is telling you, then let him know that.

But by the sound of things, your front float is hanging up or the needle is not seating properly. Should be a very simple fix. But whatever you do,

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ADJUST YOUR FLOATS!!!!

Done with that. In the bowls there is a lot of debris. Maybe rust from the tank... floats seem alright, but I'm not sure on where to go from here.

Follow Kentesu's advice and go to Sterlings site and ask for help on the Backyard Mechanics Forum.

He did. I advised him to clean the crap out of the bowls, as that was probably interfering with the sealing of the float needle.

Just to update, I cleaned the rusty debris out. I also dropped my fuel tank... i need to get it boiled and sealed. badly. I also removed my radiator, found a coolant leak. While I was in there I also gutted anything I don't need and scrubbed everything down. Lot a work but it looks a hell of a lot better. Thanks guys.
