Question Fuel Tank Pad GSL-SE

I have an 84 GSL-SE and I need to install the gas tank. I have almost all the parts I need but according to the part book I’m missing part 42-523 Pad, Fuel Tank. Can any body tell me where I can find this Fuel Tank Pad or how to make one? I called a couple of Mazda dealers but they don’t have them any more. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,

If it's the big square sheet of white microbubble type stuff, you could just get some similar stuff from some place that specializes in shipping. The post office, UPS, FedEx etc.

I actually have the square sheet from a GSL-SE tank, and it may not be necessary for when I do a fuel injected '83 in a few months, because the stock carbed tank may already have one, but I'm going to hang on to it for now.

If you need a picture, I might be able to shoot one today.

Do you think a sheet of regular foam (like the foam from a cooler) will do? And if you think foam can be used, can you send me the measure from the one you have so I can make one? Also a photo will be nice. I am also looking for part 42-299 Reinforcement. It looks like it goes between the chassis and the gas cap.

Thank you,

There are 3 pads, 1 large and 2 small ones about 2"X2". All the pads do is isolate the tank from the body and prevent rubbing.

Foam is soft and pliable, styrofoam would be too thick and not hold up.

Not sure on the other part #.

You can go to any auto parts store and find replacement padding. Even Wal-Mart and Home Depot. I plan on doing the same once I finish up my own replacement tank.

Does any one know the measure for large pad? The tank has the 2 small one and I’ll be going to Home Depot or a shipping store to see if I can find the same material to make one but like I said I’m going to need the measure. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Just buy a sheet that's about 14x17.5 inches total. I measured the flat spot area of my tank, that's about the size that you'll need. Get a thick enough pad for that, it doesn't hurt to have good padding.

just make sure it wont absorb water, i dont know if water would make it up there but better safe than sorry.

What I've noticed is you can usually still see the imprint of the old padding on the tank. It covers most of the rbbed part of the tank. I'll need to look to see if I have one out or can measure off of a loose tank

^^^ +1!!! a rubberized padding would be best. measure the perimiter of where your old pad sat on your tank and use that as a template for the new pad when cutting your own.

Beat you to it, T. Where do you think my measurement came from? Thankfully, the part where the padding rested made the rest of the tank nice and clean. Very easy to measure.

Yep, you posted while I was typing. Rubber will work too, if it's thick enough. What ever it is, it must not absorb water, it does get up there.

Good thing I didn't go out and buy some foam padding. I never thought of the water bit. Now, I need to find a place that offers rubber padding.

I just used some laminate floor padding I had left over. It was the right thickness and closed cell foam. you can pick up a small piece at any place that sells flooring
