fuel tank not venting?

First off, its an 82, 12a of course. pretty much stock car. i have had this problem pretty much since i bought the car. just got worse when i replaced the motor. it doesnt happen all the time, but when it does its annoying as hell. the gas tank wont vent correctly. ive known this for a while, as most of the time i take off the gas cap and it nearly shoots off.

But now, sometimes the car will actually die. i get out, take the cap off, and crank the car for a solid 20 seconds and it starts back. anybody else have this issue? where is the vent hose? maybe it is clogged... or maybe a vented cap would fix it? anybody know where to get a vented cap? any help would be nice, as im sure this CANT be good for the car.

You need to verify the vent line from the tank up to the charcoal canister and then see if the
canister is working. Its all covered in the FSM somewhere.

Could be a plugged vent line, could be the rubber vent hose at the tank has decayed inside and collapsed, could be the vent control valve between the vent line and the canister has failed, or could be the canister itself has clogged up.

Do you have emissions testing? Remove the charcoal canister and vent the line. You could also drill a tiny hole on the gas cap as a last resort. If you have emission testing then just blow out the vent line and replace the canister.

Black plastic tank near the washer fluid. Yank it out with all the lines except the one on the firewall near the fuel lines. Just leave the hard line there. Dont cap it. After you remove the line from the canister try blowing through it to see if it is clogged.

I'd recommend blowing through a clothe, and make sure you don't inhale at all...

The small tube is the vent from the tank.

The larger one goes to the lower vent nipple on the center iron.
