Fuel Sending Unit GSL-SE Ebay Replacement
Hey everyone!
I've got an 84 GSL-SE that has a defective fuel level sending unit. I've pulled the unit and it has 0 ohms at every position, so the level has likely broken internally.
I've scoured the internet for a replacement for this unit and I'm finding nothing. However, there appears to new (old stock) sending units out of Japan. The link on ebay is here: Ebay Link
Will this unit fit the SE? Noticeably missing is the copper wire and additional arm and pellet on the SE Model.
Will it at least *fit* the hole? I can reuse my old one and abandon the ability to know my fuel level if needed. If this new one fits, maybe its better to have a new, unrusted part, take up the hole and survive for a few more years that way.
Will it work? This would be ideal.
Thanks everyone,
-Jordan

It should fit and work. You may not have a functional low fuel light anymore, as you say.
I am pretty sure that the low fuel light was exclusive to vehicles with the North American S3 instrument cluster. It wasn't just the GSL-SE, as both of my S3 GSLs had it. I have never seen an S3 S or GS up close to see if they had the third terminal.
Before you scrap your old one, though, check for continuity between the ground terminal on the sending unit and the sending unit shell. Of the four 1st gens that I have had, three had the terminal lose continuity and I had to jumper the ground wire in the harness to a ring terminal on one of the mounting bolts.
I also had one where the resistance coil simply rusted apart so that fix wasn't so simple.

That eBay part number, FA01-60-960A, is for a 1981-1983. The 1984-1985 is FA54-60-960. The FA01-60-960A should work except the low level like you already know.
Atkins has that Fa01-60-960A in stock.
