Is a Fuel Regulator needed?

Before getting into my question, I'll provide some background info on my project car since I'm new to this site.

I'm restoring a 1970 Opel GT that is powered by a street ported 12a motor from a 83 RX-7. I had the 12a installed in the car in April of 2002 and shortly thereafter decided to hold off on the restoration project for a few years.

Unfortunately, when I had the engine transplanted from the RX-7 into the Opel, I paid a local racing fabrication shop to do the work. After putting the motor in, the car ran and idled great.

The car was almost completely gutted so I couldn't drive the car other than in the yard. Based on the short spin around the yard and how well the car idled, I thought I was good to go.

For about 5 months after getting the car back from the fabrication shop, I started the car every so often. Just before I went through putting the car into storage mode, I noticed that fuel was pouring into the carb and flooding the engine. I didn't think anything about it until the other day when I brought the car out of storage. Fuel is still pouring into the carb and the car will only run when I open up the throttle for short bursts at a time.

After further investigation, the Opel GT didn't have a fuel return inlet built into the gas tank, so the idiots at the fabrication shop ran the fuel return line into the 2 gas tank vapor outlets. I thought this was the main reason for the problems. I ran the fuel return to the fuel overflow outlet on the filler neck tube as a temporary fix ( my opel contact suggested this), but the carb is still overflowing.

Based on suggestions made in several old posts, I think that the aftermarket fuel pump installed at the tank may be too much for the carb. It looks as though I need to buy a fuel regulator to fix the problem.

My questions are these:

1) If the aftermarket fuel pump is too powerful and needs a regulator, why didn't the flooding problem occur from the very beginning when the engine was installed?

2) Is there something vital that was not re-installed on the carb during the transplant, such as a vacuum or something? I bought the car complete and drove it back from Tampa. It ran great while still in the RX-7. I read something about a vent solenoid. Since the RX-7 was intended for racing, the past owner un-hooked all the emissions stuff and only had the vitals connected. What are the "vital" hoses or connections that must be attached for everything to run properly?

I later found out that the fabrication guys knew NOTHING about foreign cars, which was my first mistake and makes me believe that they didn't hook something back up.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for your responses!

you will need a regulator and fuel pressure depends on the carb type

I took the pump out yesterday and it didn't have any label or markings on it. I could probably look up the serial number on it and find out exactly what it is.

I guess I will just order one from Racing Beat or some other place.

Do you know where I can find some pictures of how to install a fuel regulator? Its probably simple, but I've never done it before.
