Thumping in the back and its not speakers

When diving my car I often hear a clanking noise. It sounds like glass clanking around but i know its not, and I checked the car jack and thats not that either. I think it is somthing under the car. It comes from the rear right corner when I hit bumps and often when decelerating. I know this discription is rather weak but I was wondering if anyone had and idea whats making the noise

thanks

First I would check the obvious, make sure all your rear suspension is still attached (have you felt a difference in ride). Other than that, it could be U joints, or god forbid your diff. Any other ideas??

Check your lower shock mount. Mine was making a similar noise a couple weeks ago. Torqued that sucker down and it's quiet as a mouse.

Jack the car up with the jack under the rear end....this way the car is sitting the way she would on the ground. While your underthere...I would check to see if the exhaust has and new markings on it, or the heat sheild if it is still there. I would also recomment taking the rear side panels off to access the top of the rear strut to see if it has came loose any. Only other thing I could think that would rattle back there would be a brake pad.

best of luck..

just an addition to all the other comments above ....could be a loose gas tank...... check that beast, i've never had it happen but who knows with gas rockin back and forth and hitting bumps it could thump too.

does your car have drum brakes? years ago I had a set of drum brakes do that. the PO had had the brakes done somewhere, and the parking brake system (stamped piece of flat steel between shoes) and its springs were loose and rattled. sounded like a high pitched rattle or almost like glass....

something else to look at.

another weird idea, its roccomended that when you are hooking all you rear end links back up that you do it with the suspension compressed like it was driving. Just saying because I don't know how you did it.

Or, when was working on my rear, I tightened the anti-roll bar down slightly different on each side, as far as the number of threads showing, and it would make a thumping noise, I adjusted them and the noise seems to have gone away.
