fuel pump question

ok it seems the cari just got has had no gas in it for a lil while. The very first thing that happened when i connected the battery is the fuel pump started running. It was making such a noise it was obviously running dry.

I replaced the fuel filter and noticed the only gas in the lines was that of which had collected in the fuel filter. My big question is, if i put gas in there, is the fuel pump too worn or full of junk to be able to run the car. Will gas sort the problem of it being loud out or am i going to have to rebuild the pump or replace it?

Thanks

I say put some gas in the tank and find out. After sitting without any fuel, though, it might be a good idea to blow out the lines, or replace them. The fuel pump shouldn't be that loud though once you get fuel running through it. if it's still loud, check how its mounted. if its right up against metal without any rubber between, that'll make it more audible from inside.

The stock fuel pump can easily burn itself out if it runs dry because of the fact that it's so damn old. Mine did.

Before you go putting fuel in the tank, you really should take the tank off, bring it to a gas tank shop and get it flushed. They'll flush it properly really cheap. It's only held on there by four bolts (two on each strap), the fuel filler neck screws and three fuel lines (send, return and evap).

Once that's cleaned out, put some gas in it and give it a shot. If it doesn't work you're probably looking at a replacement fuel pump.

If the car has been sitting a while, any gas that was sitting in it would have turned to a varnish-like substance and gummed up anything it was sitting in (like the fuel pump, and the carburetor).

If it's been sitting long enough like mine was you probably need a carb rebuild.

Read this for information on choosing a replacement fuel pump, it's a recent thread:

And not just the stock, I think just about any fuel pump that uses gas to cool down.

Check the wiring. Looks like somebody messed with it and modded it. Look at the Haynes manual for wiring diagrams.

man i really hate wiring, its not good for a colour blind person to mess with wiring. i guess i will have to call a friend of mine and get him to look at it. i try not to mess with electrics, but i wil llook at the pump itself, make sure its wired properly. That part, at least, i can do.
