Fuel Pump problems 85 rx 7
the fuel pump went out in my son's RX-7 and we thought maybe we would replace it ourselves. Problem is....do the 85's have electric or manual fuel pumps and how can I tell? I know the manual should be in the front by the engine block and if it's electric it would be by the fuel tank? Is this correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They are all electric fuel pumps located in front of the drivers side rear wheel under a metal protective plate, the fuel filter is easily viewed next to the plate.
Ideas before replacing pump: Check your fuel pump is getting power first, disconnect the fuel line at the engine and turn ignition on, does fuel flow out. Is your filter blocked, a frequent problem. Check the fuel filter fuse in the fuse panel (note it may be outside the other line of fuses I missed mine as it was covered with crud)

thanks for the tip. we just had the car in the shop because it was running rough and chugging so the mechanic's said it needed a major tune up. $500 plus later, they said oh yeah, we also figured out you need a new fuel pump. That's gonna be another $290. They already replace the filter so we're good on that but now we're really ticked at the repair shop for not check the cheaper repair first. So is it pretty easy to replace? Sounds like we'll have to jack the car up to say the least. Are there any good websites that show you how to do it?

Stop paying that sort of money to do the basics, its an easy and cheap car to work on my last tune up cost me about $100 for oil, filters, plugs (Denso 25 are all I use) wires, air filter, a couple of fuses, light bulbs and other odds and ends, it also very satisfying to do it yourself. Use quality oil filters and to add a couple of HP and mileage replace your trans and 3rd member oils with a quality synthetic that is in the 75-90 range.
All the info you'll ever need is in here just do a search and if you can't find it ask us. This forum has saved me so much money its crazy.
If the chugging is still there consider a vacuum leak from the "Rats Nest" open your hood and look down, that mess is called the rats nest by RX7 guys, there is several post explaining this removal which will increase your power and economy but its not legal in some areas so check if they do emmision testing.
